100 Years Ago- Dec. 7, 1910
Aroostook Times

    Local — Private car No.92 with Vice President Albert Edward Todd and party aboard, was in Houlton last week a few hours. The Canadian tourism delegation had been inspecting the new Grand Isle extension.
    Houlton — For a nice smooth shave or hair cut call on Robert Hull at the LaFayette Hotel Barber Shop.
    The Times — The value of the Times was shown very clearly last week when a subscriber who had stopped the paper came in and remarked that they had been without the paper four weeks and couldn’t stand it any longer, so wished to renew the subscription.
75 Years Ago- Dec. 5, 1935

    Putnam honored — Captain of the most successful football teams Bowdoin College has had in many years and a star on that team, Albert Pearce Putnam, of Houlton received official recognition of his services when athletic officials of the college presented to him his third varsity football letter at the annual banquet of team and squad.
    McKay selected — Joe McKay, star halfback for Houlton High School the past three years, was elected captain of the 1936 football team at an election held by this year’s lettermen. Joe has made an excellent grid record thus far at high school, being a consistent ground gainer, an elusive ball carrier and a good defensive back.
    Community house — Donation of the abandoned Post Office building on Water Street to the Town of Houlton to be used as a Community Building is being sought through petitions, which are being forwarded to Postmaster General James A. Farley.   
50 Years Ago- Dec. 8, 1960

    Alarm system — Eight fire alarm boxes in new locations are being installed by the Houlton Water Company, for the town of Houlton together with replacement of 12 other boxes, all at a cost of approximately $14,000 as approved by voters in the special town meting held in October.
    Duncan Hines Book — Two Houlton lodging establishments — the Northland Hotel and the Shiretown Motel — received national recognition in the new 1961 edition of the Duncan Hines Travel Book, “Lodging for a Night,” out his month, according to an announcement from Roy H. Park, editor-in-chief of the Duncan Hines Institute, publisher of the travel book.
    Christmas wreath — Houlton citizens sent Season’s Greetings to the White House again this year with a Christmas wreath made of native pine, decorated with pinecones and gilded potatoes, attractively tied with red ribbon. Pine was gathered by Gus Porter, superintendent of public works, Orville Boutilier made the wreath and Clayton M. Currie designed the greeting card, which accompanied the gift to President Dwight Eisenhower.

    Statue — A life-size bronze statue is planned of Samantha Smith by the Auburn Mall of Auburn as a memorial to the former area resident. Glen Hines will design and produce the 37-inch memorial model.

bs-fromfiles85-dc-pt-49WINNERS — Receiving awards at the Greater Houlton Junior Miss Pageant were: Kim Clukey, second runner-up, the physical fitness award and the talent award; Teresa Haggerty, first runner-up, Spirit of Junior Miss and the poise and appearance award; Greater Houlton’s Junior Miss 1986 Mary Inman, who also received the scholastic achievement award; retiring Junior Miss 1985 Karen Skofield and Anita Bailey who shared the Spirit of Junior Miss with Teresa Haggerty, as voted by fellow contestants.
    New walls — Hatfield Randall Associates will serve as architects of the installation of partitions at Houlton Elementary School, which had opened in the early 1970s with the latest modular, wide open design.
    All-stars — Three members of Houlton High School girls’ soccer team have received recognition for their play this past season. They are senior co-captain Teresa Haggerty and junior Lisa Astle, who were both named to the All-East Class A team. Senior co-captain Janet Rooney was named All-East in Class A and All-Maine East, the best at her position in all classes.
