SHERMAN – Barbara H (Curtis) Sides, 95, of Sherman, died Sept. 26, 2010 in Patten. She was born May 29, 1915 in Sherman, the daughter of Daniel and Mary "Matey" (Harrie) Curtis. She graduated from Aroostook State Teachers College and taught school in Castle Hill, Shin Pond, Patten and Sherman.
She was a lifelong active member of Washburn Memorial Church in Sherman. An avid gardener, she loved being outside with nature and especially enjoyed feeding and housing the wild birds. She delighted in sharing her passion for beautiful flowers with her church, family, and friends. For many years she enjoyed hosting some of her dear friends "the card players" and looked forward to their evenings together. Blessed with a great memory and longevity, she was very knowledgable of family history (going back to the Mayflower) and fortunately gave many generations of family a sense of meaningful, timeless connection. That bond was nowhere more strongly felt than at her holiday table where ancestral reminiscenes were shared. Barbara was loved by many, especially her nieces and nephews who regarded her as the conerstone of the family, and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
She was predeased by her husband, Clayton Sides; two sisters, Florence Giles of Sherman and Charlotte Tucker of Cherryfield; two brothers, Alton Curtis and Freeman Curtis, both of Sherman; one nephew, Eldon Giles of Caribou; and one grand-nephew, Christopher Curtis of Sherman. She is survived by five nephews, Duane Giles, Harris Tucker, Frank Tucker, Daniel and Steven Curtis; three nieces, Althea Zimmerman, Adriann Tucker, and Bonnis Harris and their families; one special cousin, Ella Emery who recently celebrated her 95th birthday and currently resides at Mt. Heights.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Washburn Memorial Church, Sherman, where funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Daniel Prioux officiating. Interment will be in the Golden Ridge Cemetery. Those who wish may donate a children’s book to the Sherman Public Library in Barbara's memory. The family members would like to express their sincere gratitude to the caregivers at Mt. Heights Health Care Facility and to Hospice of Aroostook. Arrangements by Bowers Funeral Home Island Falls.
