HOULTON, Maine — It began in Las Vegas in the 1950s — a little thing called the Calcutta — where individual professional golfers playing in a Vegas tourney were “auctioned” off as part of a gambling event. Huge sums of money were bid on the players and Gene Littler won singer Frankie Laine hundreds of thousands of dollars as Laine “bought” Littler twice and he won both times.
The Calcutta fad filtered down to the local clubs around the country and at one time Aroostook Valley, Presque Isle Country Club, Caribou and Houlton all had annual events. Nowadays, I believe Houlton is the only one left to still participate in this tradition, renamed the Babe Caron Member-Guest, where teams are auctioned prior to play on Friday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. As we have reported, play is on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 4-5. It’s a great social weekend as golfers come from all over the state to participate.
With the golf season in its latter stages, playoffs in the Mens’ Twilight League are now under way and the President’s Cup is to be decided. Gabe Goodwin and Marty Bouchard will face off for the title.
Surviving teams in the Mens’ Twilight League after the first playoff round and their opponents are: Edgar/ Moakler vs. Holmes/ Adams, Goodwin/ Peabody vs. Madore/ Skehan, Adams/ Nickel vs. Tweedie/ Hersey and Williams/ Williams vs. McGuire/ Partner.
Ladies League results for Aug. 24 saw Happy Hookers leading the team title with 58 points and with one more week in the season, the Hookers will be tough to beat in the point standings. Individual winner for the week was Jane Phipps with 21 points.
The ladies had to challenge the difficult pin placements that were in play during the Club Championship Sunday. They were a bit tougher, weren’t they ladies?
