HOULTON — Like the proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes, the Elm Tree Diner will soon be serving meals for its faithful customers.
It has been almost a year since a fire destroyed the Elm Tree Diner. For a time, it appeared as if the iconic eatery had served its final meal. But Gary L. Dwyer was not about to let his restaurant vision go up in flames quite so easily. Construction on a new Elm Tree Diner began before the end of 2009 and is now nearing completion.
“For over 60 years, the Elm Tree has been in business on the Bangor Road,” Dwyer said. “Sadly, the diner burned down last September; since then we have been focused on rebuilding and plan to open the doors again very soon.”
The Elm Tree Diner served residents from both sides of the border for six decades. The 146 Bangor Road eatery has a statewide (and across the border as well) reputation as “the” place to eat in Houlton. Therefore, it stands to reason that once the new Elm Tree Diner opens customers can expect the same high quality food they have come to love from Dwyer’s exceptional crew of workers.
The newly constructed Elm Tree Diner, located at the same site as the original will offer a variety of menu options for everyone’s taste. In the morning, homemade muffins and thick homemade toast are staples. The Elm Tree kitchen crew proudly bakes their own breads and rolls, including white, oatmeal and oatmeal raisin. The luncheon menu offers a great selection of burgers, soups and sandwiches from a simply delicious lobster roll to your choice from our specials. The dinner menu gives you the option of choosing from beef, poultry, pork, pasta, or seafood dishes along with starter options from fresh salads to appetizers. On Fridays, Elm Tree offers an all you can eat haddock fish fry. Of course, no meal would be complete without a variety of desserts to choose from such as homemade pies, cakes, cookies and the ever famous whoopee pies.
With the help of an exceptionally capable staff of 33 employees, customer satisfaction is tops on the list for Dwyer; “we do that by creating a friendly atmosphere, a standard of cleanliness that is above reproach, offering the highest quality food and by conducting good business practices.”
The Elm Tree Diner is open Sunday through Thursday from 5:30 a.m.-8 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Now don’t forget to come and see our “NEW” and improved “Diner” — ya hear!
