“Around the Pond” race winners

Race held in memory of Ena Noyes Phipps
    On July 31, the Island Falls Lakes Association (IFLA) sponsored their annual “Around the Pond” canoe/kayak race at Birch Point Lodge and Campgrounds on Pleasant Lake in Island Falls. This year, the races were held in memory of Ena Noyes Phipps, a founding member of the Island Falls Lake Association and a participant, supporter, and first-place winner (2008 Century Canoe with Peter Blood) of the races.   
AT THE FINISH — Connor Ireland pushes hard before crossing the finish line of the 2010 Island Falls Lakes Association “Around the Pond” canoe/kayak race. Ireland came in third in the Junior Kayak Division in a time of 16:45.
  This year, 30 racers raised more than $360 for the Southern Aroostook chapter of Dollars for Scholars.
    The first place winners were: Nick Hagan (Junior Kayak), Matt Steeves (Student Kayak), Al Skofield (Adult Men’s Short Kayak), Heather Bager (Adult Women’s Short Kayak), Matthew Osman and Shanna Porter (Tandem Kayak), Clint Cushman (Open Kayak), Brian and Kelsey MacDonald (Mixed Double Canoe), and Peter Blood (Open Canoe).
    Other participants were: Junior Kayak (age 14 and under): first, Hagan, 15:11; second, Tyler MacDonald,15:54 and third, Connor Ireland, 16:45.
PADDLER – Nick Hagen finishes the Island Falls Lakes Association “Around the Pond” kayak/canoe race in first place in the Junior Kayak Division with a time of 15:11.
    Student Kayak (age 15-17): first, Matt Steeves, 19:25 and second, Nick Steeves, 20:02.
    Adult Female Short Kayak: first, Heather Bager, 20:17; second, Stacey Pfeil, 21:10 and third,  Linda Slauenwhite, 21:36.
    Adult Male Short Kayak: first, Al Skolfield, 17:02; second, Douglas Beyer, 18:23 and third, Mike Hannigan, 18:24.
    Tandem Kayak: first, Mathew Osman and Shanna Porter, 16:53 and second, Amber Byron and Aimee Guerette, 18:57.
    Mixed Canoe: first, Brian and Kelsi MacDonald, 17:50 and second, Susan Phipps and Heidi Pratt, 22:08.
    Open Canoe: first, Peter Blood in Memory of Ena Phipps, 14:34 and second, Logan Desmond and Nick Tarr, 15:27.
    Open Kayak: first, Clint Cushman, 12:40 and second, Crystal Nason,13:43.
Heidi Pratt raises her paddle in victory of just finishing with her partner, Susan Phipps, Ena Phipps’ daughter-in-law. The duo was second in the Mixed Canoe category with a time of 22:08.
