ISLAND FALLS, Maine — The town of Island Falls will be bustling with activity starting next weekend as the annual Island Falls Summerfest kicks off. This year’s theme of “Memories of Days Gone By” will be on display during the 10-day celebration, culminating with the parade Sunday, Aug. 8. A number of events will be taking place throughout the celebration, including a bicycle raffle, scavenger hunt, fishing derby and photo contest.
Raffle tickets for eight bicycles will be sold for $1 each (or six for $5) and can be purchased at the Town Office or by calling 463-2263.
The Island Falls Scavenger Hunt, sponsored by United Baptist Church Outreach Board, will entail scouring the town of Island Falls for 50 facts, artifacts, and items of trivia. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places. A copy of the complete rules and list can be picked up at Jerry’s Thriftway, Vacationland Estates, and Katahdin Library starting Saturday, July 31, or by calling 463-3260.
Aspiring shutterbugs can participate in a photo contest for local residents only (no professionals). Photos must be unframed and will be judged in three categories — “Old Homestead or Farmhouses,” “Friendship” and “Sunsets or Rain.” Photographs should include the photographer’s name and phone numbers on the back of all photos. Pictures must be dropped off with Ruth Frazier at the Town Office no later than July 27. Photos will be displayed at the IFMB for people’s choice voting throughout the week of Summerfest. The Katahdin Public Library will hold a book sale and lemonade stand Aug. 2-4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Wednesday, Aug. 2, from noon to 3 p.m., a book signing for “On Pleasant Pond,” by Sandra Newman will be held.
A Fishing Derby, sponsored by Island Falls Fish and Game Club, will be held Saturday and Sunday July 31-Aug. 1 on Mattawamkeag and Pleasant lakes. The derby runs from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Prizes to be awarded at weigh-in at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Line up at Porter’s Garage and end at Willis Lane – Theme “Memories of Days Gone By.” Following the parade, the Island Falls Recreation/Playground committee will sell hot dogs, burgers, cotton candy, sno cones and drinks. All proceeds benefit rec/playground. A cake walk for 12 and under, water slide, bouncey house, and pony rides will also be offered, sponsored by the Island Falls Recreation Department.
Other post-parade events include a flower arrangement show contest sponsored by Kim and Caroline Skinner. For more information, call 463-2328. A car show will be held on ball field. The magic of Conjuring Carroll will be on display, sponsored by Island Falls United Baptist Church. At about 3 p.m., the Island Falls Fire Department will hold a “Jaws of Life” demonstration.
