HOULTON — On Thursday, July 22 an individual found a hand grenade in a wooded portion of the Houlton area and brought the grenade to the Troop F Barracks in Houlton to turn it over to the State Police.
According to police, it was unknown if the grenade was still live so the entrance to the Barracks was blocked off as a precaution and the vehicle the grenade was in was isolated and contained. The Maine State Police Bomb Squad responded to the Barracks and safely removed the grenade without incident from the individual’s vehicle. After it was removed, it was determined that the grenade was indeed real but had been deactivated and posed no further threat.
There are no charges in the incident and neither traffic nor State Police services were disrupted by the temporary blockage of the Barracks. The name of the individual was not released by police.
