Pet Talk

If you’re like me and you have animals, I bet you’ve spent a small fortune buying every kind of pet hair product you can find.  No, not the kind of product that makes your pet hair pretty and your pet smell like perfume, the kind of product that takes pet hair off your sofa. I’ve bought sticky rollers and spiky rollers, and attachments for my vacuum and hand vacs and every product they come out with.  Evidently I’m not alone, it’s a multi-million dollar industry, making devices to de-shed your furniture.
In my house the sofa is bad enough, but the worse place is the living room curtains.  We have a big picture window and my cats love to sit in it and walk back and forth and the backs of my curtains are just awful, embarrassing, black with cat hair.  I’ve tried everything, I vacuum them, brush them, I’ve tried all the products on them, and then the other day I saw a tip in a magazine that all you need to do is put on a rubber glove and wipe the area and the hair comes right off.
It can’t be that easy, that’s what I’m thinking to myself, or that cheap, because you can get a whole pack of rubber gloves for a dollar, but I tried it and I was amazed, it works better than anything I’ve ever tried before. Within seconds the backs of my curtains were free of cat hair, I couldn’t believe it, so I just had to share with you in case you have fought this same battle and lost. A simple rubber glove, that’s all it took, and of course a big bag to collect enough hair to knit a small sweater.
If you have any pet tips that you would like to share, email them to me at houltonanimalshelter@gmail.com or if you have any questions or concerns, I am always available.  You can also e-mail the shelter at animal@pwless.net if you would like to know what’s available for adoption.
Right now, we have some really beautiful animals.  We still have our 8-year-old spayed female cat, who has settled into our community room and is just waiting for a new home.  Our 4-year-old hound is a real love, but needs lot of exercise and training. We have a little pit-mix puppy but he has a pre-adopt on him so by the time you read this he might already be placed, but just in case he’s not, if you’re interested, call the shelter at 532-2862.
We adopted out two more kitties this past week and took in a beautiful orange tabby male who is just a love.  He’s very much a ham and if you don’t reach down to pet him, he’ll reach up to remind you. We have the most gorgeous long haired gray kitty, she was born to a feral mother and it took her a while to come around but she’s been in foster care so she can get socialized and the last time I stopped in to check on her she was riding around on the shoulder of one of our employees, purring for all she’s worth. She would make a great pet for someone, preferably a quiet household.
Don’t forget that we have raffle tickets available for a 46” LCD flat screen Sanyo TV, this is a brand new still in the box TV with receipt, great picture, we are only selling 350 tickets so your chances of winning are very good. We’ve already sold a lot of tickets so if you want one, you should get it early.  Drawing is Sept. 11 at the second annual Rockin’ the Doghouse event in Monument Park.  Please mark your calendar to keep that day free because there will be dozens of exciting events going on all day long from a music festival to car show, lots of concessions, lots of games, and a chance to dunk some local celebrities in the dunking booth.
