Oehrig, Marian E., 92, May 28, 2010.  Arrangements by Cavanagh-Patterson Funeral Home, PA.
NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA – Marian Elisabeth Oehrig passed away on May 28, 2010 at White Horse Village, Newtown Square, PA. Born in Philadelphia, PA on July 6, 1918, she was the second child of George Washington Oestreich and Jeanette MacEwen Oestreich.
She was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Girls, Wheaton College, in Illinois, and New York Theological Seminary. Marian was happily married to Rev. Dr. Charles A. Oehrig for 46 years. While their three daughters were young, they lived in Houlton, Maine, where Dr. Oehrig was the minister of the First Baptist Church. In addition to the responsibilities of wife, mother and minister's partner, Marian worked at the Ricker College library, indulging her life-long passion for books. She had many happy memories of her friends and experiences in Houlton — the Town Hall bell ringing the hour, beautiful (though long) winters, spectacular autumns, majestic skies both day and night as well as miles of potato fields. Always a Philadelphian at heart, Marian was delighted when she and Charles returned to the Philadelphia area in 1967. First living in Audubon, PA and later in Devon, PA, she spent many years as librarian at the Devereux School, where she met some of her dearest friends. Retiring with her husband to White Horse Village in 1990, Marian became an active member of the community. She founded the Cultural Encounters program, served two terms as President of the Residents Association, was a member of the Accreditation and Library committees, co-managed the Gift Corral for many years and edited the White Horse Tales, later acting on the editorial board of the newsletter.
Though she traveled the world, Marian's favorite place was Lake Shehawken, PA. Her parents built one of the first cottages on the lake in 1927 and summers were blissfully spent swimming, playing tennis, traipsing through the woods and idling away the childhood hours. The lake later became a haven for her husband, children and grandchildren, who have spent many happy hours there celebrating and bonding.
Predeceased by Dr. Oehrig, Marian is survived by her three daughters, Beth Lange and husband Gregg Lange of Upper Montclair, NJ, Susan Oehrig and husband Tim O'Shaughnessy of Brooklyn, NY, and Virginia Deal and husband Jeff Deal, Springfield, PA; four grandchildren, whom she adored; her brother, George Oestreich, Jr., of Penney Farms, FL, and sister, Jeanette Wright of Fresno, CA.
In lieu of a memorial service, a musical tribute to the White Horse Village community followed by a reception will be scheduled for later this month. Condolences can be sent to Susan Oehrig at 437 Second Street, Apt 3, Brooklyn, NY 11215 or susan.oehrig @gmail.com.
