Jimmie Spellman, a Houlton-born musician, said he “was quite shocked” when he was notified about his induction into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame. “It was quite an honor. I think Rusty nominated me,” said Spellman. He had appeared with fellow musician Rusty Rogers on local cable television and the shows in Maine had earned awards. Contributed Photo
HALL OF FAMER — Jimmie Spellman, left, holds his award from the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame during his induction ceremony in Augusta. The Houlton-born musician lives in Rockland, Mass. and still performs with his band Country Masters. With him is fellow musician Rusty Rogers, a 1992 inductee into the hall of fame.
“We had done about 50 shows and he went to a TV station and asked if they would like to air them (a couple of years ago). They showed all those things on TV and I guess they liked me. So when my name came up they all voted for me,” said Spellman.
Charlie Spellman, Jimmy’s brother, traveled to Augusta from Houlton for the ceremony with his wife and said “everyone had a good time. I’m glad he got inducted.”
Phyllis Hersey, also of Houlton, attended the ceremony and said “it was such a neat way and so much fun to see him get recognized from the Maine Country Music Association.” She added that there was a very festive atmosphere at Le Club Calumet in Augusta. “It was a packed house with all kinds of entertainers, past winners and performances by the nominees.”
Spellman said his wife was excited about the honor and there must have been 80-100 people in attendance. “It was quite a crowd of musicians and guests. We had a great time,” he said.
Spellman left Houlton when he was 17 to work with country music groups. He lives in Rockland, Mass. with his wife Donna whom he met while in the service at Ft. Devens, Mass.
Although he is retired after working on the railroad after 42 years, he never retired from performing. He still sings and plays pedal steel and lead guitar with his band Country Masters which has been together for 28 years.
As for where the award will go in the Spellman home, he said he is clearing a spot on the wall in his den.
