Mid-season is upon us and how quickly it comes. Some of us have a “Mid Summer Nights Dream,” if I may paraphrase Shakespeare, “Give me the strength to shoot a score so low, that, even I, when telling of it afterward will never need to lie.”
We have some memorial events ahead with the President’s Cup matchups under way. These are hotly contested head-to-head battles with handicaps used. The defending champion is Dennis Wright.
Jerry York will defend his title as Club Champion against a group of fine young players, who will be formidable, including Dylan Flewelling, Ian and Porter Gervais and Josh McGuire, as well as perennial contenders David and Reggie Grant, Tim Guy, Jerry Adams, Mike Fleming, Fred Putnam, Gary Severson and several Goodwins — Geoff, Ben and Rick.
The County Open in mid-August is one of the season’s highlights with golf as well as great social activities to be enjoyed. I will write more about that in future columns.
In the Men’s Twilight League play, leaders in the Mickelson Division, with a tie between the teams of Turner/Mailman and Tweedie/Willard, while in the Furyk Division, leaders are York/Adams and in the Watson Division, leaders are Weber/Hannigan.
Porter Gervais shot the low round of the week with an excellent 32. I know, as he was one of Brent and my opponents. His two on number four was something to see.
In the Ladies July 13 league play, team winner were the Golf Bags, who chose their own name. They had 61 Stableford points. Team members are Misty Marino, Hollie McPartland, Sue York and Harriet Gray. Misty Marino had the most individual points, followed by Martha Fasulo, Lida Holmes and Hollie McPartland.
When you complain about the warm weather, think of mid-February and enjoy.
We know that, in any cases, golfers immediately put a noose around their neck and start choking themselves to death. They get on a hole that gives them a problem or has problems on it, like one side, out of bounds on the other side or bunkers. It’s like, O.K., don’t go in the water, whatever you do, don’t go in that water left, yeah, but don’t go out of bounds right. All we’re focusing on are the things we don’t want to do.
The brain does not function in negatives. It functions in positives.
What you want to do is make a good setup, make a good swing, hit a good shot onto the green. So all you’re looking at is your ball and your green and that’s where you’re going to hit the ball. Stay 100 percent on the positive.
