Tennis players compete

    The Maine Principals’ Association Region 1 Singles Qualifying Tournament took place Saturday at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, with five girls and five boys advancing to the Round of 48 state tourney at Bates College in Lewiston May 28-31.
    Girls qualifiers were Jenna Selander, Carlee Pinette and Laura Collins, all of Caribou; Kailee Ireland of Presque Isle and Audrey Bergeron of Madawaska. Boys qualifers were Caleb Mathers and Connor Shaw, both of Presque Isle; Christian Lizotte and Nathan Beaulieu, both of Madawaska; and Romayn Richards of Washington Academy.
    Selander won her bracket by defeating Roxy Pelletier of Fort Kent, 8-0, and Madelyn Carson of Presque Isle, 6-0, 6-0. Carson had beaten Houlton’s Hiba Bilal in her first match, 8-3.
    Pinette advanced by blanking Emily Collins of Madawaska, 8-0, and Haley Lizotte of Van Buren, 6-2, 6-4.
    Collins also won both her matches, stopping Elizabeth Stanley-Porter of Washington Academy, 8-1, and besting Megan Murphy of Calais, 6-3, 6-2.
    Ireland picked up an easy 8-0 decision over Natasha Bourgoin of Van Buren before downing Mia Ballion Colenacci of Washington Academy, 6-1, 6-2.
    Bergeron got past Sarah Smith of Calais, 8-1, and then posted a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Rebecca Martin of Fort Kent.
    Houlton players participating were Kelsey Fitzpatrick and Hiba Bilal. The other PI player was Dani Wolland.
    On the boys’ side, Mathers beat Isaac Mitchell of Fort Kent, 8-2, and Nick Willey of Caribou, 6-1, 6-1. Willey had beaten Tyler Mitchell of Shead, 8-4.
    After drawing two byes, Shaw needed three sets to dispose of Houlton’s Zacharia Harvey, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. Harvey had drawn a first-round bye and then beat Eric LaPlante of Van Buren, 8-1.
    Lizotte dealt Jon Ouellette of Caribou an 8-3 defeat before beating Van Buren’s Matt Vick, 6-3, 6-2.
    Beaulieu gained an 8-2 win over Lucas Anderson of Houlton, and then blanked Stephen Smith of Calais, 6-0, 6-0.
    Richards turned aside Houlton’s Tyler Delano, 8-3, and then won in a third-set tie-breaker over Ty Davis of Calais, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6).
    The other Caribou player in the tournament was Ezra Duplissie-Cyr, who beat Fort Kent’s Alex Charette, 8-1, before losing to Calais’s Smith, 8-6.
    Presque Isle’s Chris Cawley also took part. He beat William Manchester of WA in the first round before losing to VB’s Vick, 8-5.
    The Houlton High School tennis teams were busy on the court last week, playing Presque Isle and Van Buren.
    On Monday in Presque Isle, the Houlton girls lost 5-0. The individual scores are as follows with Houlton players listed first.
    Singles: Hiba Bilal was topped by Kailee Ireland, 8-1; Kelsey Fitzpatrick lost to Dani Wolland, 8-0 and Courtney Bragan fell to Madelyn Carson, 8-0. In doubles, Megan Gerath/Ashley Hannigan were bested by Lindsay Michaud/Divya Bisht, 8-1 and Daisy Torres/Maggie Garcia fell to Melissa Carson/Deidre Dicker, 8-1.
    The Lady Wildcats are 5-3 and Houlton is now 0-9.
    In boys action, Presque Isle defeated Houlton, 4-1. The individual scores are as follows with Houlton players listed first.
    Singles: Zach Harvey lost to Caleb Mathers, 8-3; Luke Anderson battled Connor Shaw, 8-5 and Tyler Delano pulled out a 9-8 (8-6) win over Chris Cawley. In doubles, Cody Woods/Craig Thomas fell to Kyle Gilson/Emmerson Castro, 8-5 and Avery Kibler/Jordan Russell were defeated 8-0 by Osman Castro/Brock Cassidy.
    The Wildcats are 7-1 and Houlton is 4-5.
    In Houlton, the Shire boys picked up a 3-2 win over Van Buren. The individual scores are as follows with Houlton players listed first.
     Harvey lost to Matt Vick, 8-4; Delano fell to Nathan LaPointe, 8-4, but Anderson had the lone single win, 8-2 over Eric LaPlante. Doubles, Woods/Thomas defeated Marc Levasseur/Brandon Ouellette, 8-4 and D.J. McGary/Zach Ritchie topped Nick Violette/Brandon McDonald, 8-1.
    On the girls’ side, Van Buren won 5-0. The individual scores are as follows with Houlton players listed first.
    Singles: Bilal lost to Hailey Lizotte, 8-2; Holly Bouvier was topped 8-1 by Natasha Bourgoin and Fitzpatrick was defeated 8-6 by Kaitlin Parent. Doubles, Ashley Hannigan/Torres fell to Jen Ouellette/Victoria Rioux, 8-1 and Bragan/Garcia lost to Chantal Rioux/Kristy Leonard, 8-3.
