Susan E. Picinich, interim dean of the University of Southern Maine College of Arts and Sciences, is pleased to announce the following awards and scholarships have been presented to students from the local coverage area.
Ryan Mack (Houlton HS ’05) awarded the David Fullam Social Justice Award. This award is named in honor of David Fullam, a University of Southern Maine sociology professor who retired in 1999. The award is given annually to the sociology major who best exemplifies a commitment to equity and social justice through service to the community.
Scott Thurston (Southern Aroostook HS ’77) awarded the Franklin D. Hodges Excellence in Geography award. Professor Hodges dedicated 33 years to the advancement of geography education, awareness, and integration into the fabric of the community. His knowledge and enthusiasm have inspired countless students over the years and earned him the respect of friends and coworkers. This scholarship was established in April 1999 to honor Professor Hodges at his retirement. Candidates are nominated and selected by a committee composed of geography/anthropology faculty and a representative from the Student Association.
