Marty Bouchard, principal of Houlton High School, has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2010.
Valedictorian is Stephannie L. Kreyssig, daughter of Glen and Anne Kreyssig of Littleton. She is treasurer of the National Honor Society and a Principal’s Award honor student. She is a class representative for Dollars for Scholars and a two-year member of the Academic Decathlon team. Kreyssig received the Maine Principal’s Award and the Women in Engineering Award. She was a Dirigo Girls’ State delegate and a Maine Youth Leadership Ambassador.
Very active in the music program, she is a member of the chamber choir, percussion ensemble, symphonic band and the show choir. She has been in the fall musical for four years and is a member of the All-Aroostook Chorus and All-State Chorus. She has been a varsity cheerleader and has played varsity tennis.
Kreyssig will be attending the University of Maine at Orono with a major in biochemistry.
Salutatorian is Magdalena L. Garcia, daughter of Lisa Ponder of Houlton. Garcia is a member of the National Honor Society, a Principal’s Award honor student, and the recipient of the Williams College Book Award. She is a member of the French Club and volunteers as a service learner at the high school. She has also volunteered at Wellington School, helping with Family Math and Science Night, the valentine social and open house. She has participated in the College of the Atlantic’s Islands Through Time Program, which is a two-week college program and is involved in the 4-H Power of the Wind Project.
Garcia is a member of McGill’s Community Band, All-Aroostook Band, symphonic band and Off-Beat Percussion Ensemble. She is also a member of the varsity tennis team. In her spare time, she enjoys babysitting.
Garcia will be attending College of the Atlantic and will major in marine biology.
Ashley A. Hannigan, daughter of Laurie and Doug Jipson and Brian Hannigan, is First Honor Essayist. Hannigan is a member of the National Honor Society and a Principal’s Award honor student. She has been involved in the music program as a member of the jazz band, percussion ensemble Off-Beat, the symphonic band, All-Aroostook Band, and McGill’s Community Band.
She is a member of the varsity tennis team and is also involved with the youth group at her church.
Hannigan will attend the University of Maine at Orono and will major in microbiology.
Emily DeWitt, daughter of Rena Oliver of Houlton and Jeffrey DeWitt of East Millinocket, is Second Honor Essayist. She is a member of the National Honor Society and a Principal’s Award honor student. She is a member of the North Star yearbook staff and the Photography Club. DeWitt was a delegate to Dirigo Girls’ State. She volunteers as a service learner and also volunteers as a student tutor in the after-school program at the high school and at Southside School.
DeWitt will attend the University of Maine at Orono and will be enrolled in the nursing program.
