Students at all three elementary schools in SAD 29 are getting free fruits and vegetables three times a week through the USDA Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Grant received from the Department of Education. This has amounted to more than $37,000. This program has increased the consumption of fruits and vegetables for students and has given them the opportunity to try a variety of foods they might not have tried otherwise.
“Last week each classroom got a large tray of: avocadoes, mangoes, raspberries, blueberries and kumquats,” said Lynn Brown, SAD 29 school health coordinator. “Kumquats have a very intense citrus taste. Students made faces after trying them, but they really liked them.”
