During the more than two decades that Kay lived in Houlton, she set up and operated a succession of businesses, including a yarn shop, a fabric shop and a sewing machine store. She also worked as a bookkeeper for several local businesses. In addition, she raised three children.
Born March 18, 1915, in Fort Fairfield to James and Lillian Parker, she grew up on a nearby farm. After graduating from high school, she joined the Women’s Army Corps in 1943 and served in Washington, D.C., until the end of World War II.

Kay set up a roadside stand where she sold hamburgers and ice cream. Kay also served a term as Amity town selectman. The family moved to Houlton in 1959.
After John died in 1981, Kay moved with her daughter, Anne, to Warwick, Rhode Island. In the early 1990s, Kay and Anne moved to Burlington, Vermont, where Kay and Anne started another business, the Morning Muffins bakery shop.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, a son, James, and her brothers, Emery and Ralph Kent of Fort Fairfield. She is survived by daughter Anne of Williston, Vermont; son David and daughter-in-law Kathleen of Portland, Oregon; grandson Brendan of Portland, Oregon; several nieces and nephews.
