Cooking with Susie Q

Thanks to all who have written regarding our column on “Homemade Cleaners.” I have found myself repeatedly going back to the old ways. I hope that’s because the old, less expensive ways still work, not because I, too am getting older. Ahh, but that’s another column altogether.
I would like to recognize Edna from Island Falls. Edna has several uses for baking soda and she has shared them with us this week.  I have to say I have occasionally used these over the years.  However, she sent one in that I had not heard off.  Edna, I had a leg cramp the other night and tried the baking soda OH MY!  Gone! I don’t know how it works or why, just that it did. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did.

Oven Cleaner — when a pie or casserole bubbles over in your oven-cover the spill with baking soda, leave it until pie is done.  The soda stops the smoke and when oven is cool, lift out the cooked spill with a spatula, wipe oven out with warm, soapy water.  No harsh chemical needed.
Laundry — Put 1/4 cup baking soda into washer with soap. This helps loosen the dirt and stains from clothes, also keeps washer hoses free from lint.
Indigestion-Put 1/ 2 teaspoon baking soda into 1/ 2 glass of cold water. This should relieve indigestion in minutes.
And I saved the most surprising one for last.
Leg Cramps- place 1 /4 teaspoon baking soda under your tongue and cramps are gone in seconds.  I tried this one and it worked for me!
Have a great week and keep those letters and emails coming.  I love hearing from you.  We’ll talk more next week. Please contact me at susieqcooking@ainop.com or c/o Pioneer Times, P.O. Box 456, Houlton, Maine 04730.
