100 Years Ago-Mar. 30, 1910
Aroostook Times
    Linneus — Snow is almost gone and the farmers are finishing their winter hauling on wagons.
    Hodgdon — On April 23 at Hodgdon, there will be a Civil Service examination for postmaster at Cary, carrying a salary for the year of $146.
    Houlton — Houlton Grange purchased an Ivers & Pond upright piano from A.E. Astle. The instrument has been delivered.
    New factory — The new factory of the Buffalo Fertilizer Co. is fast nearing completion. The grinding machinery was started last Wednesday and the company is now putting out 100 tons of fertilizer daily.

MY OWN POND — Blaine Lambert of Brook Street in Houlton relaxes by his own trout pond built within his home and stocked with trout. Water for the pond is supplied by a nearby brook.

    Monticello — John R. Weed, Town Clerk of Monticello for the past 17 years was reelected at a recent meeting. Mr. Weed is a fine penman and during all these years his books have been noted for their neatness and accuracy.
    Littleton School news — On our St. Patrick’s program, Merlin Carson sang two outstanding numbers “Mother McCree” and “Danny Boy”, accompanied on the piano by Doris Nelder of Houlton. These favorites were beautifully sung and appreciated by all.
    Mass meetings — Aroostook County this week stands with a united front in opposition to any reduction in the tariff on potatoes from Canada as mass meetings in every section of the county continue to be held to further mobilize the sentiment of the people to confront the greatest menace Maine has had to face in its history.

    Membership record — The highest membership in the combined Houlton Regional Development Corporation and Chamber of Commerce Drive was reached when 90 salesmen called at many offices and stores, each asking businessmen, farmers and professional men to buy a share in their own future. There were 216 on the rolls as of presstime.
    Living room pool — Blaine Lambert of Houlton is probably the only man in the world owning a 10 foot fish pond within the walls and privacy of his home, complete with native trout, with water fed into it from a brook that runs by his Brook Street home — Lambert catches the pound trout with barbless hooks. The pool inhabitants are rapidly becoming domesticated on a hamburg diet. The homemade aquarium is four feet deep.
    No bean-hole beans — The Town Council voted to deny permission sought by a Patten resident for the use of the Houlton Theatre lot for the sale of bean-hole beans.

    Elks Hoop Shoot — Shane Lambert, a sixth-grade student at SAD 70 Elementary School in Hodgdon won the New England championship in the Elks Hoop School competition. He will compete in the national championship at Indianapolis, Ind. in late April.
    Mother of the Year — Kum Lee, wife of the Rev. Kwan Lee, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Eliot and a former pastor of the Houlton United Methodist Church has been selected 1985 Maine Mother of the Year by the Maine Chapter of American Mothers Inc.
    Fifth year — Plans are under way for Houlton High’s 1985 “chemical-free” graduation party. This will be the fifth year the school has participated in this event. This year a door prize of a trip for two to Walt Disney World plus $400 spending money will be awarded to a senior in the state.
