National Wear Red Day, to raise awareness about heart disease, the number one killer of women in the United States, and to encourage support in the fight against heart disease was observed around the country last Friday. It’s a movement encouraging people to wear red which they did in and around southern Aroostook.
In the photo above, students at Houlton High School (HHS) assembled in the gym to form a heart as they did in the photo below taken at Mill Pond School.
Marty Bouchard, principal at HHS, said “it was good to see our kids and our staff come together and support a very worthy cause.” In addition to Wear Red Day, it was a dress down Friday at the high school. For a small voluntary donation to the American Heart Association, students and staff were allowed to wear jeans.
At Mill Pond School, there were several activities, including heart healthy public address announcements, bulletin board displays and information distributed to staff.
Lessons on heart health were incorporated into elementary physical education classes for students at Mill Pond along with skills related to eating nutritious foods, exercising and getting regular doctor checkups.
