WASHINGTON, D.C. — Project Learning Tree (PLT), the environmental education program of the American Forest Foundation, awarded its “GreenWorks!” grants to two projects in Maine that support students learning outside and linking up with community partners.
Dan Jacobs, of the Maine Forest Service, was awarded a grant for his Sugarhouse Project at Houlton High School. The Sugarhouse Project involves students tapping trees in the high school’s woodlot, known as Bird Farm, to make maple syrup for many years. They will build a sugarhouse to have some protection from the elements and also to create a demonstration area for younger students and the community.
“These grants support Maine students and their teachers who understand the value in working on a common project,” said Pat Maloney, Maine PLT Coordinator. “The projects also enable groups of students to do hands-on learning outdoors.”
