GHCA splits with Beavers, Vikings

    Girls basketball squads were busy this past week. The following is a recap of games played through Monday, Jan. 11.
    Washburn 59, GHCA 26 — At the University of Maine at Presque Isle Monday, Rebecca Campbell had 22 points to lead Washburn past Greater Houlton Christian Academy. Rayah Saucier chipped in 15 points for the Beavers, while her sister Meghan Saucier added 11; Jordan Chandler, four; Sarah Sjoberg, three; while Cochran and Angie Hernandez both had two.
    Mariah Wiley paced the Eagles with 15 points.
    Washburn led 20-4, 33-4, and 50-19 at the quarter breaks.
    Fort Fairfield 74, Katahdin 34 — At Fort Fairfield Monday, Brooke Beaulieu and Amanda Hotham each scored 15 points to lead Fort Fairfield past Katahdin. Courtney Churchill added 13 points (all in the first half) for the Tigers, while Kelsey Turner and Danielle Tracy both had nine; Sydney Churchill, six; Kelsie Wilson and Emily Blaisdell, both two; and Rebecca Pelkey, one.
    Olivia McNally and Brittany Fogarty had eight points apiece for the Cougars.
    Fort Fairfield led 21-4, 37-9 and 58-19 at the quarter breaks.
    “That was our best game of the season by far,” Fort Fairfield coach Larry Gardner said. “We came out hard and fast, and shut down McNally with a diamond and one, holding her to just three shots in the first half.”
    GHCA 48, East Grand 20 — At University of Maine at Presque Isle last Thursday, the Lady Eagles raced to a 27-9 halftime margin and a 40-10 third-period lead.
    Mariah Wiley scored 19 points for GHCA, while Kaitlyn Beaudoin led the Vikings with eight points.
    Bangor Christian 33, Katahdin 29 — The host Patriots held a 20-15 halftime lead and built a 31-21 margin after the third in last Saturday’s action. The Lady Cougars came back in the final period, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit.
    Olivia McNally scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead Katahdin of Stacyville.
     Schenck 41, Katahdin 30 — At Stacyville, the Wolverines held a 16-10 lead at halftime and maintained the scoring distance after the third, 26-20 en route to the win.
    Schenck’s Lauren Lowell scored nine of her game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter as the Wolverines secured the win.
    Melissa Duffy led the Lady Cougars with a 12 points and Myah Smallwood added six more.
    Shead 54, East Grand 17 — The Lady Vikings fell behind the host Tigers, 27-7 at halftime and Shead never looked back.    
    Kaitlyn Beaudoin and Elisha Farley scored five points apiece for East Grand.
    In the prelim game, Shead won, 54-11.
    Southern Aroostook 71, East Grand 10 — In Dyer Brook last Wednesday, East Grand ran into a buzzsaw. The Lady Warriors outscored East Grand 21-0 in the second period.
    Liz Goodall scored 16 of her 18 points in the first quarter as the Lady Warriors picked up a lopsided win. Olivia Raymond netted 10 points for the winners.
    For East Grand, Elisha Farley scored four points.
    Fort Fairfield 66, Hodgdon 44 — At Fort Fairfield on Wednesday, the Lady Tigers outscored Hodgdon, 18-5 in the second quarter for a 28-15 halftime advantage. Over three periods, Fort Fairfield built a 52-27 lead en route to the win.
    Chelsea Sloat paced Hodgdon with 18 points, while Destiny Ellis had seven, along with Haley Quint and Emmaly Jurson’s six points each.
    Amanda Hotham hit 11 free throws to score 23 points for Fort Fairfield.
