Ludlow — Leonard and Beecher Horten are on leave this week from the lumber camps at Hastings Brook.
Monticello —The Ladies Aid of the M.E. Church served a fifteen-cent supper in the vestry. There was a large attendance and a goodly sum collected.
Local — The market of John Riley has been partitioned off and Miss Susie Riley will run a confectionery department in the part formerly used as a cigar store.
Buttoning up — A crew was busy last week putting the frost jackets around the hydrants.
A rumor — The rumor is passed along on the street that a new 5- and 10-cent store will be started in Houlton in the near future.

Woman postmistress — Houlton may have its first woman postmistress with the appointment of Mrs. Marita Peabody, wife of Maurice H. Peabody. She will be the first woman ever, since a post office was established here in 1826 and she will be the fourteenth person in 109 years.
New worthy matron — Miss Edith Henderson was elected Worthy Matron of Fidelity Chapter O.E.S.
Bridgewater — A delightful dancing party was given by the Pettingill boys in the Opera House Thursday. There were 40 couples as guests.
Houlton — Word was received here Monday of the death of Arba Eugene Powers, Jr., one of the foremost character actors on the American stage and one of Maine’s most distinguished sons. Born in Houlton, he was most recently honored by the State of Maine when his portrait was hung in the Blaine Mansion.

Littleton — Littleton taxpayers will vote approval or disapproval of this year’s town meeting for the borrowing of $20,000 to add two classes to the Consolidated School on the north end of the gym. The enrollment of the school in 1952 when it was constructed was 152, but this fall it is expected to reach 195.
Patten — Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Grass have bought the store owned by Mrs. Velma Birmingham.
Monticello — Master Guy Carter spent New Year’s Day with Master David Hanning. Master Peter Brewer of Carys Mills spent the past week with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ashley Brewer. Miss Janice Cowperthwaite has been confined the past week with measles.
Spaulding Lake — The weatherman has been dishing out a little real winter weather the last few days — cold and wind. Perhaps this isn’t good advertising for this section of our state, but Sunday it was quite a common sight to see vehicles being pushed and pulled all over the place.
Ricker classes — The Ricker College residence program at Loring Air Force Base, which has enrolled more than 600 students in evening classes since July of 1958, will inaugurate Saturday morning classes in its upcoming eight-week short term.Pioneer Times File Photo 1910
WINTON SIX — This car has run 1,000 miles on an upkeep of 77 cents. The car cranks itself and inflates its own tires. This car is the best possible to turn out with the best workmanship and best material. It can be seen at F.F. Harrison, 76 Main Street. Demonstrations given any time weather permits.

Associate administrator leaves — Ronald Victory, associate administrator at Houlton Regional Hospital has been named chief executive officer for Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln.
Yearbook staff — The Houlton High School yearbook staff includes: Editor JoAnna Bradford; Jona Scovill, assistant editor and Aimee Putnam. Gail Scovill of the faculty is the advisor.
Completes tour — M.M.F.A. 3rd Class Darrin Clark, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Clark of Smyrna Mills has returned from a six-month tour of South America and Africa.
Working in Bucksport — Debra Hahn, daughter of Mildred Lewis of Houlton recently presented a report at a meeting of the Bucksport paper mill and timberlands officials. She is a graduate of Houlton High School and has a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Maine at Orono.
Littleton — Nomination papers are ready. Open to fill are a clerk, one selectman, a road commissioner, a sexton and a SAD 29 director. The selectman’s position is now held by Gary Wilson; road commissioner, Fred McBride; school director, Gary Cheney and sexton, F. Gerald Henderson. The Town Clerk is Anna Schools.
