HOULTON — The Houlton Humane Society held its 10th annual “Homes for the Holidays” event at the Houlton Congregational Church Saturday in an effort to find homes for many shelter pets and raise money to assist with the shelter.

BARGAIN SHOPPER — Dorothy Donahue of Houlton checks out some of the many items available at the yard sale.

According to organizer Cathy Davis, four cats were adopted, including one that had been with the shelter for two years. That number was down from her hopes of placing 10 cats, but Davis said she was pleased nonetheless.
Saturday’s event featured a chicken stew lunch, crafts, bake sale, yard sale and a visit with Santa Claus. Items for the yard sale did not have price tags. Instead, shoppers were encouraged to give a donation on what they felt the item was worth.

COLLECTION SPECIALISTS — Volunteers Heather Miller, left, and Jen Stewart work the donation table at Saturday’s “Homes for the Holidays” fund-raiser. The Houlton Humane Society collected more than $1,700 and found homes for  four cats.

“The lunch was a huge success, we sold out of everything,” Davis said. “It was just a great day all the way around and we are very pleased and thrilled with the results. People have been so generous, it’s heart warming.”
In total, more than $1,700 was raised by Saturday’s event, with more money still coming in from raffle ticket items.
