VALUED AT MILL POND SCHOOL — Gerald (Moose) Karnes was voted staff member of the month by the administrative team at Mill Pond School. Loreen Wiley, school principal, says he drives a bus for the district and fills in for Jim Ritchie when he is away. Wiley filled in some details on Karnes saying he has mentored several Mill Pond students in past years by exposing them to camping, four-wheeling, and other outdoor activities. As for work around the school, she says he takes the initiative when he sees something that needs to be done. “He simply does it without being asked and seeks no praise for his many efforts. He is an invaluable staff member!” Wiley also commented on his community involvement, saying that Karnes is actively involved with the youth at the Houlton Methodist Church where he is a deacon who is instrumental in organizing some of the church’s delicious suppers offered to the public. And, she adds, Karnes spent last winter as the coordinator for the Hodgdon Rec’s basketball program.

EXPERIMENT — Principal Loreen Wiley says focus groups at Mill Pond School were recently treated to a science experiment involving a solar tube. Sara McQuarrie, middle school science teacher, had students in the after-school program fill a 50-foot tube with air. As the sun heated the air inside, students watched the tube begin to rise. Wiley says it’s just one of many interesting things happening at Mill Pond School.
