SACS, Houlton teams playing well

There was plenty of soccer action on local fields last week, with Houlton and Southern Aroostook each picking up a pair of wins. East Grand topped Hodgdon for their first win of the season, as well.
    Katahdin 2, Ashland 1 — On Monday in Stacyville, the Cougars broke a 1-1 tie with 31:31 left in the game when Mickey Savage scored the game-winner. He also put Katahdin ahead 1-0 just 55 seconds into the game, converting a Kolby Gallagher corner kick for the 2-4 winners. Goalie Jesse McNally made 14 saves on 19 shots.
Ashland’s Casey Cobb tied the game on an assist from Kenny Tarr, with 26:18 left in the first half. Net keeper Bobby Gardner turned away six of 10 shots for the 5-3 Hornets.
Houlton 5, Calais 1 — At Houlton on a blustery Saturday, Garry Fowler scored two goals in the second half to lead Houlton by Calais, and was supported by teammates Jimmy Fitzpatrick, Cody Briggs and Dylan Gard, all with single tallies. Houlton goalie Jared Tapley made nine saves for the 4-0-2 Shires, who outshot Calais, 30-13.
Houlton 3, Katahdin 0 — Last Tuesday in Houlton, Dylan Gard’s goal, along with single tallies from  Jimmy Fitzpatrick and Garry Fowler gave the Shires the win, improving their record to 3-0-2. Malik Abouleish and Gard each had assists and goalie Jared Tapley made three saves.
Katahdin goalie Jesse McNally set aside 17 of 30 shots for the 1-5 Cougars.
Katahdin 2, Hodgdon 1 — Last Thursday, Katahdin’s Billy Livezey scored the winning goal with 3:54 left in the first half for the home team. Savage scored the first goal on an assist from Maverick Elwell. Goalie McNally stopped eight of 14 shots.
Josh Hudson scored for 1-8 Hawks in the second half. Goalie Dan McGillicuddy made five saves on eight shots.
East Grand 2, Hodgdon 1 — At Hodgdon, the East Grand Vikings picked up their first win behind Jordan Crone’s goals. Goalie Abe Brittain played outstanding in net, making 24 saves on 45 shots.
Chris Harris scored off a Wade Estabrook pass for 1-7 Hawks. Erik Ryan and Dan McGillicuddy combined for two saves on six shots.
Shead 3, East Grand 1 — Earlier in the week, the Vikings were defeated by visiting Shead.
Crone scored in the second half for the Vikes, while goalie Brittain made 26 saves on 32 shots.
Southern Aroostook 2, Lee 1 — Friday in Lee, Dakota Sleeper’s unassisted goal with 3:48 left in the second half gave the Warriors the win. The Pandas staked a 1-0 lead in the first half when Jake Kuester scored on an assist from Dustin Sawtelle. However, the Warriors came back and tied the game before halftime on an unassisted goal by Taylor Locke. Goalie Jesse Boulier stopped 6 of 10 shots for the 7-1 Warriors, while Lee’s A.J. Harris made 16 saves on 27 shots for 1-5 Lee.
Southern Aroostook 3, Ashland 1 — At Presque Isle on Wednesday, Sleeper scored all three goals, two in the first half and one in the second. Jake Lassonde and Jesse Small provided assists, while Jesse Boulier rejecterd 10 of 11 shots.
    Girls wrap up
The Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors disposed of three more opponents last week for just one loss on the year, as they eye a repeat state title.
The Lady Shires also had two wins on the week over Calais and Katahdin.
So. Aroostook 7, Lee 1 — On Monday, the Lady Warriors rolled to a win over host Lee behind sisters Liz and Evangeline Goodall, who each scored two goals, along with a pair of goals from Jasmine Rockwell and a single tally from her sister Janel. Evangeline Goodall also had an assist. Goalie Emily Cummings blocked 10 shots, as  SACS outshot Lee, 23-14. Lee’s Felicia Thorton made nine saves.
So. Aroostook 4, Ashland 1 — It was a battle of the unbeatens, and SACS won last Wednesday.
Liz Goodall scored two goals in the first seven minutes as the Lady Warriors topped previously unbeaten Ashland to remain perfect on the year. Janel Rockwell and Rochelle Nadeau each scored and added an assist. Evangeline Goodall also chipped in with an assist. Goalie Cummings saved eight of 16 shots.
Ashland’s Taylor Baker stopped 11 of 17 shots.
Southern Aroostook 3, Woodland 2 — It was a close contest last Thursday in At Dyer Brook,  but Janel Rockwell scored the second of her two goals with 25 minutes to play to propel SACS to victory. Kim Pratt added a goal and Evangeline Goodall an assist. In goal, Mallary Lawlor set aside five of 11 shots.
Woodland goalie Kelsey Burtt had 11 saves on 23 shots.
Houlton 4, Calais 1 — Vanessa Sanderson’s hat trick and Brooke Emerson’s goal provided the winning margin for the Lady Shires on Saturday. Mikaelah Tracy assisted on two goals, while goalie Madison Lezotte had eight saves onf nine shots.
Calais net keeper  Hillary Hollingdale blocked 10 saves of 17 shots for the 1-3 Blue Devils.
Houlton 4, Katahdin 0 — Last Tuesday, the Lady Shires blanked visiting Katahdin.
Abby Kinens knocked in three first-half goals, along with Amanda Fogarty’s first-half tally. Madison Lezotte and Marina Cameron combined to stop eight of 12 shots.
Katahdin keeper Mikayla Patterson stopped 12 of 16 shots.
Ashland 3, Katahdin 2 — Macie Pelkey of Ashland scored the winning goal with 9:07 left in the second half to break the 2-2 tie.
For Katahdin, Melissa Duffy scored two goals in the first half and Kali Rush provided both assists. Net keeper Patterson made 14 saves on 17 shots.
Katahdin 2, Hodgdon 1 — Earlier in the week, Katahdin defeated visiting Hodgdon behind Megan Merry’s unassisted goal with 3:01 left in the game. Duffy scored the Lady Cougars’ initial goal with 7:45 left. Patterson had 16 saves on 17 shots.
For Hodgdon, Chelsea Sloat scored on an assist from Taylor McGary with 1:54 left, while Emmaly Jurson stopped 16 of 18 shots.
Hodgdon 2, East Grand 0 — At Hodgdon, Lacey McQuarrie and Kensie Palmer each scored, while Taylor McGary and Britta Oliver made the assists, as the Lady Hawks blanked East Grand. Jurson combined in goal with Marissa Malone for two saves on three shots.
Kim Armstrong turned away 26 of 37 shots for the Lady Vikings.
Woodland 7, East Grand 0 — Armstrong stopped 20 of 31 shots for East Grand.
