Southern Aroostook soccer teams off to blazing start – SA girls have yet to allow a goal

    The Southern Aroostook Warriors hope to make it four wins in a row to begin the season when they travel to Sherman Station and take on Katahdin Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. contest.     SA, the defending Class D state champions, collected victories over Hodgdon, Easton and Central Aroostook last week by a combined score of 17-0 to begin its regular season slate.

    The Houlton Shiretowners split contests against St. John Valley teams last week, beating Madawaska after losing to Fort Kent. The Shires have a lengthy break as they next host Lee Academy Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Hodgdon Hawks, which coupled its loss to SA with a shutout loss to Easton, is hoping to break into the win column this week. They traveled to Fort Fairfield yesterday and will host Ashland Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
    Summaries of games played from Aug. 25-31 are as follows:
    Southern Aroostook 6, Hodgdon 0 – A hat trick by Rochelle Nadeau Monday helped give Southern Aroostook a convincing shutout victory over Hodgdon in Dyer Brook.
    Evangeline Goodall chipped in with a goal and an assist, while teammates Kim Pratt and Cassie Garcelon both netted goals for 3-0 Southern Aroostook. Emily Cummings and Mallary Lawlor combined to save both shots they faced in net for the Warriors.
    Emily Jurson faced 31 shots and turned away 13 in goal for 0-2 Hodgdon.
    Houlton 3, Madawaska 1 – The Shires collected an impressive road victory Friday, using goals by Abby Kinens, Chelsi Murray and Martha McPartland en route to the win at Madawaska.
    Madison Lezotte saved 20 of 24 shots in goal for Houlton, which evened its season record at 1-1.
    Valeri Parker scored on a second-half penalty kick for the Owls. Goalkeeper Amanda Nadeau finished with 14 saves on 18 shots.
    Southern Aroostook 5, Easton 0 – The Warriors blanked the Bears at Easton Friday, thanks to Evangeline Goodall’s hat trick.
    Also scoring for SA were Elizabeth Goodall and Kimberly Pratt.
    Southern Aroostook enjoyed a 38-12 shot advantage, with Emily Cummings turning away eight shots for the Warriors and Taylor Burtt stopping 17 in goal for the Bears.
    Easton 5, Hodgdon 0 — A Bear attack on the visiting Hodgdon Hawks left them reeling with a 5-0 loss in their season opener Thursday. Easton held a dominating 43-10 shot advantage.
    Ariana Babineau and Carla Halvorson each scored twice for the winners, while Samantha Fuller added a goal. Abigail Poole, Brooke Hammond, Mindy Desmond and Halvorson all rung up assists.
    Hodgdon’s Emmalay Jurson stopped 19 shots, while Taylor Burtt rejected eight.
    Southern Aroostook 6, Central Aroostook 0 — At Mars Hill last Wednesday, the Warriors were out in force as they romped to a lop-sided win over the host Panthers. Southern Aroostook held a commanding 28-7 advantage in shots, and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

    Liz Goodall, Kim Pratt and Evangeline Goodall all scored a pair of goals to lead Southern Aroostook. Lauren McGary and Kaitlyn Sommers both had one assist.
    Ashley Estabrook, Nashalli Parks and MacKenzie Hatt all saw time in the net for Central Aroostook. The trio combined for nine save. Emily Cummings had two saves in goal for the Warriors.
    Fort Kent 2, Houlton 1 — On a blustery day in Fort Kent last Tuesday, the Lady Shires and Warriors looked as if they would head into an overtime, but instead, Fort Kent freshman Lexi Desjardin found the back of the net with the game-winner with 1:38 left in the game.
    The teams were knotted at 1-all at halftime, as Houlton’s Chelsi Murray started the scoring sequence when she lofted a corner kick into the penalty area. Houlton freshman Mikaelah Tracy swooped in on a loose ball, sending it to the right side of the Fort Kent goalie.
    The Warriors’ winning goal started when Desjardins broke down the left side, curling a high shot inside the right post by the outstretched arms of goalie Madison Lezotte.
    Fort Kent held a 22-9 shot advantage in the game. Lezotte rejected 12 shots, while Carissa Pelletier set aside six.
