STACYVILLE – Gladys (Sauntry) Matchett Cummings, 73, died Aug. 15, 2009, in Bangor. She was born July 12, 1936, in Millerton, New Brunswick, the daughter of Eugene and Victoria (Donahue) Sauntry.
Gladys was a communicant of St. Benedict's Catholic Church and a former eucharistic minister. She founded Daughters of Isabella at St. Benedict's Church and served as regent, past regent and treasurer. She will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Catholic faith. A recent passion was ministering to the sick of the community by helping to prepare and deliver prayer blankets. Gladys was a member, special sister, mother figure, role model, ringleader and friend to the Katahdin Women's Weight Training Group. Her sparkle, infectious smile, compassion, competitive spirit, self-discipline, inquisitive nature, and love of learning, family and Jesus Christ will never be forgotten. Gladys was always first in line when fun, music or dancing was in the air.
Gladys is survived by her husband of 25 years, Gerald Cummings of Stacyville; 10 children, Dan, Cathy, Paul, Rick, Brent, Jerry, Kent, Terry, Gregory and Lisa; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; many brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and several brothers and sisters.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Benedicta, where a mass of christian burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Thursday, with Father Joel Cyr, celebrant. Interment will be at St. Denis Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Daughters of Isabella, St. Benedict's, care of Bowers Funeral Home, P.O.
