Cary Library’s 2009 summer program ends

This year the Cary Library summer reading program was “Be Creative at the Cary Library: Explore the Arts.”  For the first time, the library also offered a teen summer reading program, “Express yourself at the Cary Library: Explore the Arts.” Both were very popular.
The final week of the program entailed two speakers, Michelle Bye spoke on spinning and Sue Tortello spoke about nutrition.
Those who participated in the summer program also toured Visions with Iva Sussman, participated in a yoga demonstration at the Mindful Way with Linda Rowe and also toured the Houlton Movie Theatre with Patrick Blanchette.
For the 2009 summer reading program, the library continued the practice of providing a nutritional snack to each child for reading a book. As each child reached their halfway goal they received a Pizza Hut certificate. Everyone reaching their goal received a certificate of completion, another Pizza Hut certificate and a prize was given at the final party. Readers also participated in weekly drawings for pizza certificates, ice cream cone certificates and a variety of prizes.
The final party for the children was held in the evening as an attempt to allow more parents to participate with their children in helping them celebrate reaching their reading goal. The final party for the teens was also held in the evening and they had a pizza party.  A special treat for the party-goers was the opportunity to get a tattoo from TaTitude.
This year, all readers did an outstanding job reading. Ninety readers in the children’s program read over 2,000 books. Seven teens finished the program and read 88 books. This year’s total books read from both programs totaled 2,105.
During the month of July, each Tuesday and Wednesday, a grant from the Maine Nutrition Network provided the children with the opportunity to participate in “Whole Grains are Good For You: Popcorn is a Whole Grain.” The children made their snacks and at the end of the program created their own recipe books to take home filled with nutritional materials. Staff also walked each Tuesday and Wednesday before the snack time to incorporate exercise into our nutrition program. Too bad the weather didn’t cooperate.
Cary Library staff would like to extend their thanks to the many sponsors who helped make this program successful. The Rose and Samuel Rudman Library Trust provided the funds for the purchase of non-fiction books and prizes for children to supplement their reading repertoire. Maine Nutrition Network sponsored the “Whole Grains” program and allowed the staff to offer nutritional snacks. Chris, from Pizza Hut continues to provide for the program with his generous donation of more than 250 personal Pan Pizza coupons. The Farrar family provided tattoos to all of the teen summer reading program participants (and even some of the parents).
The library would also like to recognize and thank all the staff, the devoted volunteers, Jacob, Zara, Brad and Peggy, the presenters and all the donors who helped make this summer’s program a huge success.
