The observance of Memorial Day in 1909 had a special interest to every citizen of Houlton as the beautiful Soldiers Monument was dedicated with appropriate exercises in remembrance of those soldiers who fought in the Civil War.
The monument was constructed by the Houlton Granite and Marble Works and cost $3,500, $1,000 of which was appropriated by the town and the balance was contributed by private citizens at home and other places, who were interested in Houlton.
The memorial is 25 feet high and will ever be the source of satisfaction to every citizen of Houlton. It is located in Monument Park adjacent to the Cary Library.
Everyone has a reason to be proud of this beautiful memorial, an ornament of the town and a fitting memorial to the soldiers who gave their lives in the defense of their country.
