100 Years Ago-March 31, 1909
 Aroostook Times

    Hodgdon —The Kentucky Jubilee Singers gave an entertaining show in the Town Hall to the largest audience ever assembled in town on a like occasion and many were unable to gain admittance.
    Millinocket train wreck — A heavy special freight moving south at 40 miles an hour down the grade above the station at Millinocket crashed into a yard engine working north. The locomotives telescoped and the freight was piled up, 20 cars of lumber, potatoes, hay and other freight being smashed into kindling wood and scattered on both sides of the track, making one of the most disastrous wrecks of the winter. Engineer Vinal Henry of Houlton, of the freight is still missing. At a late hour no trace of him had been found and it is feared that he is beneath the wreck.
    Monticello — At a recent town meeting it was voted to purchase a rock crusher and a chemical fire engine.


75 Years Ago-March 29, 1934

    Eagle Scouts— Owen Hannigan, son of Mrs. Thomas Hannigan of Smyrna Street has reached the coveted prize that all Scouts hope some day to reach. He is an Eagle Scout.
    Sherman Mills — Beverly Rand and John DeWitt, students of the University of Maine are spending this week with their parents.
    North Road — Percy Nicholson and Hartley Henderson left by train on Monday for Orono where they will attend Home Week at the University of Maine.
    Lincoln School — Those on the honor roll for all the school year are Isabelle McAttee, Jean Turney, Ellen Barton, Rita M. McAttee, Emery Lincoln, Arnold Duff and Alice Stevens. The fifth and eighth grades are doing a set of penmanship papers to be corrected by the Palmer Method Company.

    Shoplifting — Area merchants expressed concern due to the recent problem of shoplifting by youngsters 6 to 12 years old. While the bulk of shoplifting today is confined to the age group mentioned, adults are not free of this stigma. One chain store owner points out that parents and their offspring have been equally guilty of concealing articles with no intent to pay.
    Oakfield — The Carl Adams family of Oakfield lost their home and farm buildings in an early morning fire Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Adams and their six children lost everything.
    Stores asked to close — The Retail Trade Board has recommended that all merchants close their establishments Good Friday for the observance of union services being held at the Houlton Methodist Church from one to three p.m.
    Blue Angels — Announcing the coming of the Navy’s crack aerobatic jet fighter team will be in Houlton July 18.
    Monticello — The Ladies Aid of the Lake Road Baptist Church met at the home of Mrs. Ruth Cain. The day was spent tacking quilts. Dinner was served at noon to the following members, Mrs. Randolph Burtt, Mrs. Goldie Flewelling, Mrs. Ellery Watson, Mrs. Sandy Graham, Mrs. Lona Cullins, Mrs. Lottie Drake, Mrs. Iola Kneeland, Mrs. Wendell Prosser, Mrs. Merle Foster, Mrs. Francis Carr, Mrs. Herbert Evans, Mrs. Hazen Kneeland, Mrs. Harley Simms and the hostess, Mrs. Cain. One guest was present, Opal Nason.

    Hodgdon — Principal Woodrow A. Dunphy has announced the honor pars for the Class of 1984: Valedictorian, Craig Libby; Salutatorian, Christopher Rhoda; First-Honor Essayist, Denise A. Williams; Second-Honor Essayist, Todd D. Williams and Third-Honor Essayist, Michele Roy.
    England Bound — Paul Porter, of Lawrenceville, N.J., son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Porter of Houlton, left Mobile, Ala. at daybreak, March 10 on the first leg of an Atlantic crossing to Plymouth, England. He will accompany Jack Hunt, owner of the Crystal Catfish III, a 31-foot Southern Cross sailboat.
    Houlton — Depositors of Aroostook has changed its name with a new merger now completed to Key Bank.
    May Day — The Houlton Regional Hospital Auxiliary’s May Basket committee is preparing to make 200-plus baskets to be sold, filled with homemade fudge donated by all Auxilians and many church members.

HOULTON JV GIRLS — Coach Tyler Perry has completed his first year of coaching a girls basketball team and his Houlton High Junior Varsity Lady Shires posted a 7-6 record. Participating on the team were from left, seated; Managers Sue Roy and Saundra Clark. Standing, Becky Roy, Fawn Dunphy, Lynette Gallop, Pam Nelson, Heidi Britton, Amy Wilde, Coach Perry, Stephanie Ruth, Diane Scott, Billie-Ann Ritchie, Vicki Delong, Margaret Gilpin and Debbie Saunders. Absent was Lisa Astle.
