Beware the Freedom of Choice Act

To the editor:
 On January 20th a new president will be sworn into office. President-elect Obama made this campaign promise to Planned Parenthood: “The first thing I’d do as President is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. That’s the first thing I’d do.” Many may not realize what The Freedom of Choice Act is all about so I feel compelled to share.
    It is a proposed federal law that would enshrine abortion as a “fundamental right”, and would strike down all federal and state laws that could “interfere” with abortion or “discriminate” against it in public funding. How does this affect you and me? Your tax dollars will pay for abortions for people in the military and on Medicaid, abortions will be permitted through all nine months of pregnancy up until the day of birth, Religiously-affiliated hospitals must either perform abortions or close, Military hospitals must provide abortions, Parental consent laws that requiring that parents be included in the decision-making when a minor daughter is considering abortion would be outlawed, practitioners and medical facilities who morally object to abortion will no longer be protected from being sued or fired.
    Feeling sick to your stomach yet? How is it that in a country where you can be fined or put in jail for injuring your pet, people enjoy the freedom to “choose” to murder an innocent baby and after Jan. 20 will be even more free to do so? Something is terribly wrong with this picture.
    It is not too late to let your voice be heard. Petitions are now being signed to be presented to our own Congressman Mike Michaud, and our Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins as well as the President-Elect. Check out the Maine Right to Life Web site or give me a call (532-0934) and I will get the petition to you. Remember, all that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.
