BRAVE – Thirty eight brave chess players ventured through an ice storm to participate in the fourth annual Aurora Winter Solstice Chess Tournament played at the Airline Community School in Aurora on Saturday, Dec. 14. Three players from Houlton made the 135-mile trip. Former state champion (1980) Roger Morin above, took points from Fred Irons, Nathaniel Bryans and Akagi Kayashima to finish with a perfect 3.0 points and clear first. Up and coming 14 year-old David Ngo of Houlton High School took a strong second place finish in his group. Young Charles Purham won his first game ever in a rated tournament, to round out the Houlton field.
