HOULTON FROM THE PAST — The Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum has received black and white prints of downtown Houlton from the Otis Putnam family. Take a look at them Saturday, Nov.15 at their last supper of the year. Serving begins at 4:30 until 6 p.m. Pork roast is the main course of the evening.
The supper is $8 per person and includes the main meal, dessert and a beverage.
The museum has had a great year with many visitors from near and far. Items of yester-year are still arriving and finding a new home in the museum. Along with those donations, comes a lot of history, too.
Some larger pieces donated are, an Aroostook boy jigger wagon and a large wooden roller. The jigger wagon is built low to the ground and was one of the first to carry barrels to and from the potato fields.
F. Harold Haines designed and manufactured these wagons in Mapleton. Mark Nightingale located this one in Southern Aroostook and donated it to the museum. Another item that has been stored under a barn in Haynesville is a large wooden roller that was used to compress snow in the roads for easier traveling.
The Music Men will not be performing as planned. Look for them to play at a supper after the first of the year. This group plays music from the 1940s and ‘50s and received rave reviews when they played for the last supper in October.
The museum will be open for tours the day of the supper from 1 p.m. through the meal. Tours can also be set up by appointment at other times. Please contact Jay Clark at 532-7125 or leave a message at 538-9300.
The museum is located on U.S. Rt. 1, eight miles north of Houlton. It is handicapped accessible with lots of parking. The next scheduled supper will be Jan.17, 2009. The supper will be free to those paying their 2009 dues.
