Thank you to the Battered Women’s project

To the editor:
October being the month that recognizes violence against women, I wish to thank the Battered Women’s Project in Aroostook County. I never thought I would need such a service, but this past year I did, and their help meant everything to me — from the first steps to safety, to the final outcome in court, they were there for me. They remain there for me should I need them for anything.
They helped me understand the mindset of a batterer and what makes a person abusive, and how to deal with such people in a safe manner. There are many options and no woman needs to be “stuck” in such a situation.
I have come to believe that domestic violence is more common than many of us know. To anyone who feels they might be in an abusive relationship, I recommend The Battered Women’s Project — they are a fountain of information and non-judgmental guidance.
I hope that the man who abused me does not join the high statistics of recurrence so common in violent men. I am not a victim of domestic violence, I am a survivor of it — and the Battered Woman’s project is a great part of the reason why. They are a valuable resource to this community and should be recognized.
