The high school soccer regular season is finished and teams are awaiting their playoff opponents, as the Eastern Maine girls’ preliminary games are set for Friday and the boys will begin on Saturday.SHIELDS – Houlton’s James Bates shields the ball from an oncoming Schenck defender during last Wednesday’s game. The quarterfinal rounds are set for Tuesday (girls) and Wednesday (boys), Oct. 28-29, depending on weather.
The final Heal point standings and pairings will be released today on the Maine Principals’ Association website at www.mpa.cc.
Wrapping up last week’s soccer action, the Houlton Shiretowners needed to win last Wednesday night’s game against visiting Schenck, which they did, but not until late in the game.
The Shires and Wolverines were tied at 1-all after Patrick Longstaff scored for Houlton and Aaron Hutchins for Schenck. Then, Longstaff struck for his second tally — the game winner — with 5:57 left in the game.
Houlton goalie Ryan Van Buskirk stopped seven of eight shots, while Schenck’s Ryan Thompson blocked 13-of-15.
Last Tuesday, the Shiretowners overtook visiting Hodgdon, 6-1.
Ashir Abouleish and Gary Fowler both scored two first-half goals, with Longstaff and James Bates capping the scoring. Longstaff, Lowell Matthews and Dylan Gard all had assists. Goalie Van Buskirk combined with Jared Tapley to stop 4-of-5 shots.
For Hodgdon, Erik Ryan had 17 saves on 23 shots faced, while Jake Tidd scored their lone goal.
On the girl’s side, the Lady Shires pounded host Schenck, 10-1 last Thursday.
Chelsi Murray recorded a hat trick, while Lainey Herring and Amanda Fogarty each scored twice. Martha McPartland, Rebecca Crandall and Amelia Butler each had single tallies. Madison Lezotte and Colleen Fitzpatrick combined in goal to stop 16-of-17 shots.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Shires defeated visiting Hodgdon, 6-0.
Herring tallied a hat trick, while Murray, Brooke Deveau and Vanessa Sanderson scored, as well. Fogarty had two assists, while Murray and McPartland each had one. Lezotte stopped 4-of-7 shots faced in net, while Hodgdon’s Megan Jurson had seven saves on 14 shots.
In last week’s edition of the Houlton Pioneer Times, scorers in the Houlton-Lee game were incorrect.
The Lady Shires battled to a 3-3 tie with in double overtime. Murray scored twice and Abby Kinens had the other Houlton goal. Fogarty had two assists and Kinens one.
Last Thursday, the Southern Aroostook Warriors were edged 4-3 by Madawaska in Presque Isle.
The Owls improved to 12-0, while the Warriors’ record went to 8-5-1.
Dakota Sleeper led SACS with two goals and assisted on Tyler Robinson’s goal. Goalie Dillion Boulier had 16 saves.
Last Tuesday, the Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors toppled Washburn, 3-1, as Evangeline Goodall had a goal and assist. Brittany Charette and Liz Goodall also scored. Goalie Emily Cummings had a pair of saves.
SACS outshot Washburn, 12-5.
Last Thursday at Mars Hill, the Panthers overpowered East Grand, 8-0, behind two goals by Manny Martinez. Rounding out the Panthers’ scoring were Kyle Murray, Brendan York, Dan Brewer, Spencer Stetson, Logan Thomas and Matt Graves. Goalie Ross Grass had two saves, as the Panthers outshot East Grand, 51-4.
East Grand goalies Abe Brittain and Nick Malone had 27 saves.
In girl’s action, the Lady Panthers topped East Grand, 6-1 behind two goals by Sarah Long and goals by Brittany Mosher, Sarah Michaud, Megan McClay and Gabrielle Brewer. Long, Mosher and Michaud all added assists.
The Lady Panthers outshot the Vikings, 29-4.
Kelsey Daoust scored East Grand’s lone goal and goalie Courtney Lloyd had 11 saves.
Last Tuesday, the Vikings fell to host Woodland, 7-2.

Last Friday in their first meeting, Woodland shutout East Grand, 10-0 in Danforth.
Brittain stopped 38 of 48 shots for East Grand.
Last Wednesday, the Katahdin Cougars shutout Hodgdon, 13-0, in Stacyville.
Ethan Qualey led the Cougars with a hat trick and two assists, while Marshall Davis, Richard Qualey, Victor Clukey and Micah Rodgerson all scored twice. Matt Kay and Matt Tarr also scored, while Peter Johnson and Davis had three assists. Goalie Jesse McNally stopped 4-of-8 shots faced.
For Hodgdon, Josh Murchie had 32 saves against 56 shots faced.
On the girl’s side, the Lady Cougars took a 3-0 shutout win over visiting Hodgdon.
Melissa Duffy, Mary Jo Robinson and Marie Heath all scored, with Duffy and Robinson adding assists. In goal, Jade Clippinger and Dani-Beth Cyr stopped all 11 shots.
