DANFORTH, Maine — This fall Jill Plummer’s second-grade class at East Grand School read a book called “Second Grade Baby” by Ann M. Martin in which the characters send a teddy bear to an airport. At the airport a traveler picked up the bear, took it to another city— taking the bear on an adventure. That traveler wrote a letter back and also sent pictures of the other city back to the class so the students could learn about different cities and countries. When that journey was done, the traveler would leave the bear in the airport for the next traveler to repeat the process.
After they finished reading the book, the class decided to replicate the same idea with a few changes. They chose Buckaroo Bunny who belongs to second-grader Mallory Gilman to be the world explorer. The class mailed Buckaroo to Jennifer Black, a friend of student Sydney Cowger’s parents for the first leg of his adventure. Black works at Darmstad Air Force Base in Germany. There are endless travel opportunities for Buckaroo Bunny.
Buckaroo Bunny was sent with instructions for each person receiving him to send the class a letter or postcard of where he has been along with pictures of Buckaroo at a special place or landmark when reaching a destination. He is expected to arrive back at East Grand School on or around Dec. 10. Buckaroo’s travels are going to be tracked on a world map located in the classroom, and the pictures and documents received will be displayed.
Stayed tuned and the class will keep you updated on the travels of Buckaroo Bunny.
