The first Roger Howland Skateboarding Competition is scheduled for Oct. 18 at the Houlton Community Park Skate Park from 9a.m. to 4pm. The competition is held in memory of Roger Howland, a young man in recovery from substance abuse who died in 2004. The event will raise funds for school based substance abuse prevention programming in Aroostook County and is open to anyone ages 5 and up, including adults.
The first half of the day will include skill training with advanced skateboarders, while the second half will consist of a competition in which participants will compete against individuals in the same age category. Participants with advanced level skills are encouraged to compete in the advanced level competition. Participants will be divided into age groups for training sessions, as well.
Prizes will be awarded. There will also be a 50/50 raffle for additional prizes. Food will be available on site for those who wish to purchase breakfast or lunch.
