TOPS #ME 233
By Lois Downing
Take Off Pounds Sensibly, Chapter 233 of Houlton, met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its Friday, September 26 meeting. Twelve ladies were signed in with another six for KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly).
Joyce Estey was present and conducted the meeting. We were happy to welcome Wendy Henderson as a prospective member. Charlotte Marley had charge of the drawings in the absence of Denise Kinney. Here are the winners: 50/50 Lois Downing; skinny dish, Donna Parent and mystery gift, Brenda Lacostic. Joan Scott gave the weight recorder’s figures: loser of the week, Elinor Harvey with runner-up Joyce Estey.
Barbara Grant led us in a few minutes of exercises, some were standing, some sitting. Joyce reminded the ladies of the fall rally at the Brewer Auditorium October 4, next Saturday. Joyce then told us about a meeting she attended at Houlton Regional Hospital on food safety. Some of the facts on food are: don’t count on your sense of smell, taste and sight to tell if a food is safe; it can take half-an-hour to six weeks to become sick from unsafe foods (usually one feels okay after eating and becomes sick later) you can also experience the following from a foodborne illness vomiting, fever, diarrhea, dehydration; some people have a greater risk for foodborne illnesses. Four steps are recommended for food safety: wash hands and surfaces often; don’t cross-contaminate; cook to proper temperatures and chill and refrigerate promptly. Remember: when in doubt, throw it out!
The next meeting will be October 3 at the same location. If you would like more information on the chapter, you may call Charlotte Marley at 757-8483 or Betty Ivey.
Weigh-in time is at 8:-8:45 every Friday with the meeting beginning at 9 and usually ending at 10 o’clock. Everyone is welcome.

While out pruning some shrubs in my backyard recently, I was really bothered by, of all things, mosquitoes. You would think that the recent frosts that we have had would put an end to them. Probably by the first snowfall they will be gone.
Still have the black cat around but don’t see it often. Food disappears, though, so it can’t be far away.
Checked on skunk holes while out pruning but only found three or four. Maybe they have gone into hibernation for the winter. And the deer are coming out more often now. Had two lambs and their mothers the other night and those little ones sure like to play. Spent 20 minutes just watching them running around, leaping and jumping. The mothers joined in some but were more interested in grazing. And early in the morning, just as it is getting light, two does are usually out there busily eating but assume the lambs are still sleeping.
