To the editor:
When setting the mill rate, I hope the Houlton Town Council will consider the following: An increase is mostly felt by our citizens on fixed incomes, our elderly and our low-income citizens
We all talk about the cost of fuel for our homes and our vehicles, the price of food and so on. We all know that times are tough. So we all know that everything is on the increase.
I believe (and I am talking about the federal government, state, county and the town) had they put more control on our spending it could have made things different, but they didn't.
So, before you go deeper into the pockets of the Houlton taxpayers, think about how you would feel if you had limited funds; a tax increase could put you in a position to sell your house, or give up your apartment and move home, or not being able to eat properly, among other things.
Please look around and you will find taxpayers in this predicament. Some are not so fortunate as others. I ask the Houlton Town Council to do everything to avoid a tax increase, and not just talk about it, we all now talk is cheap.
I encourage all the taxpayers of Houlton to come to the council chambers next month when the date is set to adjust the mill rate.
Carl Lord Jr., chairman
Board of Budget Review
