EASTON – It was a crowd-raising moment as Carl Nemer sank a shot for Ashland to tie, 55-55, with Easton and send the Class D matchup into overtime on Monday night. The Hornets held the Bears back in extra time for a 63-57 final advantage.
Jeremy Tarr put in 16 points for Ashland, and Lucas Belanger worked underneath the basket for 14 points. Nemer totaled 12 points in the orange effort. Jason Levesque added another 10 for the winning team.
Easton’s Jeremy Brock shot for the game-high 21 points. Brad Trask tallied up 11 for the Bears.
Mindy Chasse and Whitney Flint led the scoring past Easton in the girls’ game, 61-20. Chasse put in 14 points, and Flint sank 13 points for Ashland.
Kristen Boxwell led the Bears with 10 points.
The Easton boys needed 16 minutes to readjust to their home court keeping a pace behind Southern Aroostook in Class D basketball at the Easton den on Saturday. The Bears collapsed the Warrior lead with 30 points in the third quarter and came away with the eventual 69-43 win to bring their record to 11-1.
Brad Trask plowed up an impressive 35 points including five baskets from behind the arc. Nate Sanders and Jeremy Brock added 12 each for the Bears.
The Easton girls’ fought hard, but fell to Southern Aroostook, 72-22.
“They’ve got a lot of heart,” said girls’ head coach Evan Graves. “The future is bright. They’re a young team, but we have some eighth-graders coming up and the program is still growing.”
The Ashland boys will travel to East Grand tonight for their next game at 5:30 p.m. The Ashland girls are next in action on Thursday at Limestone at 7 p.m. The Easton boys face Washburn on Friday at 7 p.m. in their next game, the girls’ game begins at 5:30 p.m.
Beavers stop Eagle effort
The Limestone/Maine School of Science and Mathematics girls had the home advantage on Wednesday night as they faced Washburn with their 6-2 season record; but the Eagles couldn’t budge past the Beavers, 50-20.
Washburn defense kept Limestone in single-digits until after the half to prove their status. Kelsee McLaughlin shot for 15 points in the seventh win, and Erica McDougall claimed 13 points. Rebecca Campbell added three three-pointers to the Beaver scoring column.
Limestone’s Caitlin Good had the team-high eight points for the Eagles.
After three quarters, last Wednesday the scoreboard looked favorably on the Washburn Beavers as they hosted Hodgdon. Nick McIntosh’s hot hand shooting led the Beaver force to tip the scales in the WDHS favor.
However, Hodgdon’s Chris Williams put in a three-point shot that gave the Hawks the advantage with less than a minute to play. Washburn lost in the waning seconds, 47-46.
McIntosh put in a game-high 22 points, and Connor Fitzpatrick scored 12 points for the Beavers.
The Limestone boys next face Wisdom at home on Monday at 7 p.m.
CAHS storms past SAHS
Senior center Sarah Long led the Central Aroostook charge over Southern Aroostook Monday night, 59-40. Long powered in 22 points for the Panthers. Amber Bradley pitched in another 18 points for CAHS as the Panthers repost their record at 11-1.
The Central Aroostook girls face Katahdin on the road at 6:30 p.m. tonight, while the boys will host Katahdin on Thursday at 7 p.m.
PIHS has winning week
Monday night basketball and the cold weather drove fans to a Presque Isle High School double-header against Mount Desert Island. Hometown fans celebrated as both the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams played to victories over their Class B opponents.
The Wildcat boys shot to an early lead over the Trojans in the first, but MDI crept back to end the first half one point down from PIHS, 23-22. Having recovered from the bus trip, the Trojans conquered the court in the third quarter to take away the lead, but Presque Isle’s scoring power won the day, 54-49.
Nic Gallant powered in 13 points and nabbed nine rebounds for the Wildcats, while Adam Kingsbury added another 11.
The Wildcat girls kept a keen eye for the rim to defeat the Trojans, 70-66. Point guard Sarah Porter led game-scorers with 25 points for PIHS.
The scoreboard remained close for all four, but Presque Isle shot almost 100 percent from the free throw line, 14 for 15, to confirm their victory. Amy Michaud and Kayla Legassie both put in 16 points for the Wildcats.
PIHS on the road
Senior Wildcat Kingsbury showed his experience and focus, swooshing a three-pointer to break a tie with only seconds remaining that gave Presque Isle their 10th win of the season. PIHS shot from behind at the half to return for a 47-44 victory over John Bapst on Saturday and improve their season record to 10-2.
Kingsbury’s final basket of the game was one of three three-pointers toward 16 points. Fellow senior Russ Mortland pitched in nine points for the Wildcats.
Crusader pressure kept the Wildcats back in the girls’ Class B basketball game at Bangor on Saturday. John Bapst quickly expanded the seven-point halftime gap to defeat PIHS, 51-33.
Porter and Legassie scored the only two baskets beyond the three-point arc, and each put in nine points for the Wildcats.
The Presque Isle boys powered over Fort Kent on the road last Wednesday, 46-39.
Tied at the third quarter, 29-29, the Wildcats stormed over the Warriors in the remaining eight minutes.
Nate Ackerson sailed in two three-pointers toward his 16-point total, while Mortland popped up one shot beyond the arc toward an 11-point tally for PIHS.
Houlton took advantage of the homecourt crowd to take a win away from the Presque Isle girls on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 60-46.
Point guard Porter led Wildcat offensive efforts with 14 points, and Legassie put in 10 for the Big Blue.
Presque Isle will travel to Foxcroft on Saturday. The girls begin at 3 p.m. with the boys at 4:30 p.m.
