Snow may have been factor, say police

HODGDON – A snow and slush covered road is considered to be a factor in a fatal car accident which occurred on the morning of Friday, Jan. 11. Two people were killed when their vehicle crossed the center line and hit an oncoming logging truck on U.S. Route 1 in Hodgdon, about one mile south of Houlton.
The Maine State Police responded to the two vehicle head-on collision on shortly before 10:30 a.m. According to Maine State Police Sgt. Tom Pelletier, a 2006 Subaru operated by 76-year old Yvonne Bigelow of Amity was traveling south on U.S. Route 2 in Hodgdon when Bigelow lost control of the vehicle, crossed the center and struck a north-bound logging truck.
The logging truck, owned and operated by George Francis of Perth Andover N.B., attempted to avoid the Subaru but was unable to do so.
Both Bigelow and passenger 82-year old Philip Crowley also of Amity were killed at the scene. Francis was not injured. The Subaru sustained extensive damage. The tractor-trailer, a 2005 Western Star, sustained minor damage.
Seatbelts were in use at the time.
