Lady Cougars take first loss of season

    The Katahdin Lady Cougars (6-1-2) soccer team rebounded on Monday for a double overtime tie with unbeaten Ashland after suffering their first loss of the season against Bangor Christian on Saturday.     Against visiting Ashland, Jalisa Moore’s second goal of the game off a direct kick knotted the score at 2-all with 3:19 left in the second half.
    Moore had staked her team a 1-0 lead in the first half, but Ashland’s Jackie Raymond tied the game and teammate Whitney Flint put the Hornets ahead 2-1 with a second-half goal.
    Katahdin goalie Kayla Stevens blocked eight of 10 shots, while Ashland’s Taylor Baker stopped six of eight shots faced. The Hornets are 6-0-2 on the season.
    The Lady Cougars’ only loss of the season was last Saturday when visiting Bangor Christian shut them out 4-0. Katahdin goalie Stevens set back eight of 12 shot attempts.
    On the boy’s side, the visiting Hornets picked up a 3-0 win over the Katahdin boys in Stacyville. Katahdin goalie Matt Tarr had seven saves on 11 shots, as the Cougars slip to 4-4-1.
    Last Saturday, the Cougars battled to a double overtime 3-3 tie with visiting Bangor Christian.
    Marshall Davis turned in his second goal of the game off an Andy Kay setup with 10:10 left in first-half action to tie the game at 3-all. Billy Duffy converted an Ethan Qualey pass for a goal.
    Katahdin goalie Matt Tarr and the Patriots’ Sam McLeod each turned in a scoreless second half and kept anyone from scoring through two overtimes. Tarr rejected five of 15 shots, while McLeod and Brandon Wilcox combined to stop five of 22 shots faced.
    Last Tuesday, the Houlton Lady Shires blanked host Calais, 5-0, behind goals by Courtney Putnam, Emily Bartlett, Amelia Butler, Brittany Guiod and Taylor Bailey. The Lady Shires improve to 3-5, as goalie Madison Lezotte made five saves on seven shots.
    In boy’s action, Ryan Hill tallied the game-winning goal in a scramble in front of the net with 3:12 left in the first overtime to give Houlton a 3-2 victory over host Calais. James Bates and Pat Longstaff each scored a goal, with Jeff Holmes chipping in with an assist. Houlton goalie Ryan Van Buskirk blocked 21 of 29 shots.
    The Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors won twice and lost once on the week. The Lady Warriors were defeated 7-1 by Lee Academy on Monday, and 8-1 by Ashland last Wednesday. They shutout Woodland, 3-0 last Thursday.
    Against host Lee, 8-0, Brittany Charette scored the Lady Warriors’ only goal, while goalie Emily Cummings had six saves. The Pandas held a 35-7 shot advantage over SACS.
    Ashland’s Flint scored five goals to lead the Hornets to victory over Southern Aroostook. Rochelle Nadeau scored SACS’ lone tally. Cummings blocked 12 of 28 shots.
    Charette scored twice and Nadeau once in the Lady Warriors’ only win this week over Woodland. Janel Rockwell chipped in with an assist, while goalie Cummings set back three of six shots faced.
    For the SACS Warriors, Josh Branscombe led his team to a 4-1 win over host Lee last Friday with two goals and an assist. Dakota Sleeper scored and added an assist in the win, while Jake Lassonde tallied a score, as well. Goalie Colby Clark stopped nine of 19 shots, with Lee’s goal coming in the second half.
    The Warriors tied Ashland, 3-3 in double overtime last Wednesday. Ashland’s Tyler Cote scored with 5:38 left to force overtime. Sleeper scored twice and Tyler Robinson added a goal for the Warriors, while goalie Clark had 22 saves on 49 shots.
    The East Grand Vikings slip to 2-5, with a split against Jonesport-Beals and Highview Academy last week.
    The Vikings fell to JP-Beals, 2-1, as the Royals scored the game-winner with 16:74 left in regulation. Viking goalie Abe Brittain had seven saves on 10 shots, and Harvey Brittain scored East Grand’s only goal.
    Tyler Morse scored twice and assisted on two other goals as the Vikings defeated visiting Highview, 5-1. Lucas Gillis had two goals, while Tyler Langill scored and picked up an assist. Goalie A. Brittain had five saves in the game.
    The Lady Vikings also topped visiting Highview, 2-1 behind goals by Jackie Dodge and Kelsey Daoust. Dodge scored the game-winning tally with 38:48 left in the game. East Grand goalie Courtney Lloyd stopped two of five shots faced.
