Fund-raising event
Don’t forget to pick up your order form for the E-9-1-1 numbers. Flyers are also available and describe the looks and sizes of the signs. Both flyers and order forms are available at each of the community town offices. This is a fund-raising effort from students in grade 8 at WDES (Class of 2012). The regulation signs are designed to satisfy the E-9-1-1 ordinance for all three communities of Perham, Wade and Washburn. The completed forms along with payments can be sent to WDES Attention: Mrs. Churchill, 33 School Street, Washburn, ME 04786. What better gift than safety can be given to a family or loved one, and any orders received by Wednesday, Nov. 28, will be ready for Christmas.
Students share ‘giving basket’
Teacher Christine Skinner helped students deliver the goodies to Town Manager Andrea Powers and Anne Carter who organizes the two annual holiday giving baskets from the town to area residents.
The giving basket is at the classroom of both a.m. and p.m. kindergartens. During a week-long drive, students and staff donated canned goods for delivery to the Town Office. This is a longtime tradition at Washburn and the children enjoy taking part in the annual event that benefits others in the community.
Historical Society to meet
The Salmon Brook Historical Society will be holding their quarterly meeting on Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Washburn Civic Center. Please note the supper will begin at an earlier time, with the buffet line starting at 6 p.m. Please bring a main dish or dessert and your place setting. All are welcome, so bring your friends and neighbors.
The business meeting will follow the supper and a monetary collection will be taken for Washburn’s needy families, enabling the town to help provide them a better Christmas.
Rotary ‘wheels’
The Washburn Rotary is currently selling 2008 Faces and Places calendars featuring photos of various Washburn area groups, including: Boy and Girl Scouts, American Legion, Washburn Rotary, ATV and snowmobile clubs, Historical Society, women’s groups, youth recreation, municipal offices and the fire department.   The calendars are available from any Rotarian, ask for them at White’s Exxon, Katahdin Trust or phone 455-8034. The Washburn Rotary puts all its proceeds from fund-raisers like this back into the community for all to benefit. Please support them in their efforts.

Special birthday
Bea McBrearity Burout recently celebrated her 90th birthday with friends and family at her home in Perham where she lives with her daughter, Birdena Cochran. There were 28 present to enjoy a special visit with Bea, and she received many special wishes and gifts from all.
She was presented with some special flowers and a handmade corsage of wildflowers from Viola Helstrom, and one gift was a $1 dollar bill for every year old she was. Bea sported a ‘fistful’ of bills and also was delighted at another gift, one she had hinted for! Her two daughters chipped in together and got her a treadmill, which she uses faithfully twice each day.
The guests enjoyed a light buffet style luncheon which also included cake and ice cream, along with punch and coffee. Her birthday cake featured a recent photo of Bea sporting a hand-knit sweater she had made.
Her son Reginald was unable to attend as he and his wife Sandi were expecting their third child at any time. It was lucky he stayed home, as their son Benjamin was born within hours of the party in Perham. He phoned Bea with best wishes and sent his mother a Kitchen Aid appliance, as the family doesn’t intend for their mom to “get lazy.” She still knits and crotchets, and now they’re hoping she’ll do some great home cooking in style with this new appliance.
Bea has three children, Birdena McBreairty Cochran of Perham, Reginald McBreairty of Indiana and Beverly McBreairty Brady of Palmyra, Maine. She has 21 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and many more great-great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed a special visit with her brother-in-law, Jim McBreairty, who gave her a special brooch which belonged to his late wife, Doris. The gift was very much appreciated by Bea. She will likely pass this family heirloom on to one of her daughters. Special thanks went out to Linda Seward for all her efforts at saving the special birthday event in photographs.
