Did you know that there are over 850 licensed dogs living in the city of Presque Isle? The most popular is the good old all American mixed breed, followed by the golden retriever and Labrador. The most popular name is Buddy, but there are quite a few Mollys and Maxes, too. Well it’s that time again. The 2008 dog licenses are now available at City Hall, and registration is required by Jan. 31, 2008. Beginning this year, you’ll get a new tag every year when you re-register your pet — not just the little sticker to put on the tag.
Why, you ask, do we need to license our dogs anyway? The quick answer is because it’s a state law; the city simply collects the fee and issues the license on behalf of the state of Maine. Did you know that 90% of this fee is used to fight animal abuse in Maine? To report cruelty to animals or abuse call (207) 287-3846 or 1 (877) 269-9200 or e-mail animal.welfare@maine.gov.
The fee for an unaltered dog is $11, for neutered or spayed dogs the fee is $6. After Jan. 31, an additional late fee of $15 is added.
If you no longer own an animal that you had registered last year or if you have any questions, please be sure to contact the City Clerk at 764-2520.
