Girls’ grades three and four basketball
The season kicked off with a game between the Black Bears and Terriers. The Terriers jumped out to the early first quarter lead, as Olivia Hudson scored six points. Taylor Williams led the Black Bears back into the game with eight points in the second quarter. The Black Bears had a slim 12-10 lead at the intermission. The Black Bears clamped down defensively in the second half, outscoring the Terriers by a margin of 10-3 to pick up the 22-13 win. Williams ended with a game high 18 points to lead the Black Bears. Regan Nelson and Leslie Mejia each chipped in with two points. Heather Kirk and Alison Bell helped out with defensive play.
Grace Player finished with three points and Alisa Brewer and Michaela Dumais both contributed two points. Michelle Cawley and Victoria Williamson pitched in with skilled ball handling and rebounding for the Terriers.
Boys’ grades three and four basketball
Syracuse rode the shooting of Caleb Nadeau to down North Carolina in the inaugural game of the season. Nadeau’s two long-range jumpers in the first quarter helped Syracuse jump out to an early lead they would never relinquish. Nadeau finished with a game high 12 points. Patrick Cash followed with four points. The quartet of Abe Dow, David Kofstad, Grant Bridges and Sam Gray each scored two points. North Carolina got two points apiece from Michael Mahon, Nicolas Shields, Noah Kinney and Ryan Cochran.
Byron Winslow’s basket with less than two minutes to play proved to be the difference as Duke topped Arizona, 8-6. Duke jumped out to the early 4-0 lead with baskets from Winslow and Hunter Trask. Arizona stormed back to tie it up in the third quarter with baskets from Issac Devine and Jake Kinney. Trask’s second bucket of the night gave Duke a 6-4 lead heading into the final quarter.
Bradley Kinney tied it up early in the fourth for Arizona. The teams battled back and forth. Finally Winslow was able to find the hoop to propel Duke to the victory. Duke also had strong defensive play from Khasen Lowe and Connor Murchison. Eddie Kilcollins and Dylan Lovely provided Arizona with plenty of steals and rebounds.
North Carolina used a balanced scoring attack to down Michigan, 12-4. Noah Kinney led the way for North Carolina, scoring all six of his points in the first half. Kyle Rider got Michigan on the board in the third quarter, cutting the North Carolina lead to 6-2. North Carolina quickly extinguished Michigan’s comeback attempt with two second half points each from Nicolas Shields, Grant Stewart and Andrew Lessard. Rider scored all four points for Michigan, and Nick Bartlett grabbed countless rebounds.
Grades five and six basketball registration
Registration for the grades five and six basketball program will be held at the recreation center. Presque Isle residents may register beginning Monday, Nov. 19. Non-resident registration begins Monday, Nov. 26. The program offers leagues for both boys and girls. Practices and games will be held weekdays after school at the community center. The registration fee is $15.
Thanksgiving week activities
Friday, Nov. 23: Presque Isle residents can partake in a Dollar Day at the Indoor Pool, swimming from 3:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. for a dollar. There will be open gym on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with a Contest Day taking place during open gym on Wednesday. From 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., children grades one to six can participate in checkers, ping-pong, connect four and hoop shoot with chances to win candy or other prizes. Open gym times will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. for elementary students and 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. for middle/high school students. These times will also continue on Saturdays and Sundays starting on Saturday, Nov. 24.
Youth cross country skiing program and rentals
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will be teaming up with the Nordic Heritage Center to hold a youth cross country skiing program this winter. The program will be for students grades three to eight. The program will run on Thursdays from Jan. 17th to Feb. 14th, then Wednesdays from Feb. 27th to Mar. 26th, from 3:15 to 5:00 p.m. There will also be meetings on Saturdays from Jan. 19th to Mar. 29th from 10:00 a.m. to noon, with the exception of Feb. 23rd. The fee for the program is $15 for Presque Isle residents, non-residents will be charged an additional fee. Skis are available for rental through the season through Mojo. Total packages are available at the Recreation Center for $40 before November 15th, $50 after. Please call 764-2545 for more information and/or with any questions.
Kids’ Christmas party
The Presque Isle Recreation Department is once again hosting a Christmas party for children in grades one to five. The event will be on Friday, Dec. 14 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Parents can finish up some Christmas shopping while their kids enjoy an evening of fun. Activities will include bingo, gym games, a Red Sox Swap and eating pizza. Pre-registration is required with limited space available. The fee is $5 per child, plus a $3 to $5 Red Sox Swap gift. Registration begins Friday, Nov. 28 at the William V. Haskell Community Center.
