FREEPORT, ME – Elsie B. (Hagerman) Estey passed away peacefully on October 23, 2015, at the Freeport Place Assisted Living Facility. Elsie was born on May 4, 1922, in Houlton, ME. She was married for 44 years to Philip A. Estey who preceded her in death in 1989.
Elsie spent most of her life in Presque Isle where she worked as a stenographer, assistant city clerk and bookkeeper. She and Phil enjoyed many summers at their Echo Lake cottage surrounded by family and friends whom they so generously hosted. They loved to play cards and ice skate.
Elsie was an avid and skilled knitter, making sure that any new baby who entered her large extended family had a brand new sweater and blanket, and that everyone else had a supply of handmade gloves and mittens.
Elsie is survived by her children, Terry Estey and wife, Valerie of Cumberland, ME, Kathy Estey Collazo and husband, Pedro of Miami, FL, and Douglas Estey and wife, Deborah of Loganville, GA. In addition, there are six grandchildren, Christopher Estey, Dustyn Estey, Bradley Estey, Shannon Estey Williams, Erin Estey Tracey, and Jonathon Collazo. In recent years, the lights of her life were her great-grandchildren, Connor Estey, Amelie Estey, Ben Tracey, Will Tracey, Ella Williams, Evan Collazo and Ashlynn Collazo. Elsie is also survived by two sisters, Gloria Dodge of Atkinson, NH, and Patricia Dodge of Philadelphia, PA; and her brother, Dana Hager-man of Sanford, ME. There are many wonderful nieces and nephews, too many to mention that she always enjoyed as well.
Elsie spent her later years at Bartlett Circle in Yarmouth where she made some great friendships, particularly, Dottie and Carroll, Mabel and Dorothy. She loved to bake, and always laughed that she hadn’t figured out how to make a pie for “One” so she would always share the goodies with her friends and neighbors.
The last two years of her life were spent at Freeport Place where she was lovingly cared for by Elaine, Tom, Mary and many others. She also enjoyed lifelong friendships with Shirley Cyr, and Evelyn Holder of Presque Isle and shared many fond memories with them.
In accordance with Elsie’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. There will be graveside burial sometime in the spring of 2016 at the Fairmount Cemetery in Presque Isle. If you would like to remember her please make a donation to the Ronald McDonald House or Grant Memorial Methodist Church in Presque Isle.
We will miss her dearly, but know that right now there is quite a card game going on in Heaven.
