WASHBURN NEWS
By Beth Boddy
During the weekend of Sept. 18, Washburn’s Boy Scout Troop 177 hosted the North Star District Fall Camporee at their camp on the Everett Road. The Camporee was a further celebration of the troop’s 50-year anniversary being celebrated this year.
This was one of the largest camporees in recent history with over 200 Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and leaders in attendance, from Fort Kent to Bar Harbor.
On Friday night the Scouts were treated to a night hike around Camp Harrison featuring the Web, Kim’s memory game and a make-believe hazardous material exercise.
Saturday featured the opening ceremony and 11 skill events from the 1965 era of Scouting along the ATV trail from the Everett road to the Wade town office in Washburn. Events included first aid, conducted by the Washburn Fire Departament; signaling using flags, water safety, tent pitching, a Scouting history quiz, walking stick uses, fire building, trail signs, hobo stove cooking, map and compass use, and tree identification hosted by the Forestry Service.
Saturday featured a hot dog lunch provided by the Washburn Rotary Club at the Trail Runners Club. Saturday night was a potluck supper, with all troops attending providing a camp made dish for the meal and Willie’s famous rolls. Dessert consisted of a 50th anniversary cake that was cut by Scoutmaster Larry Harrison and longtime assistant Scoutmaster Tony Sellers, who traveled back from New York for the occasion.

Following the evening meal was a Scouts Own religious service held on the camp porch and conducted by Pastor Ellen Cleaves and Pastor Sue Brown. Following the service a campfire was held, along with skits and songs led by all troops in attendance.
To top off the evening, an outdoor movie was held in front of the camp: “Follow Me, Boys,” an old-time Boy Scout movie, and the night hike trail was again in operation.
Sunday morning featured the closing ceremony with all awards being presented along with a 50th anniversary plaque presented to Troop 177 and a “50 years of service” plaque to Scoutmaster Larry Harrison, presented by District Executive Steve Hughes.
By 10 a.m., the fields and camp area were empty and cleaner than ever. Troop 177 thanks all who supported the Anniversary Camporee and welcomed visiting Scouts to town.
