Looking for something fun to do? Why not head to Portage Lake for the annual Summer Round Up?
Events will begin on the evening of Friday, Aug. 14 with the Town Potluck Supper at 6 p.m. Bring your favorite dish to share with the community along with your own drinks. The Luminary Memorial Ceremony will be held at 7:30 p.m. Luminary bags can be purchased at the town office or at the Pavilion beforehand. Both events will take place at the Pavilion and are hosted by the Portage Lake Historical Society.
Saturday, Aug. 15 will be filled with many family-friendly events, including the Rayno Cote Mixed Couples Golf Tournament at the Portage Lake Country Club. Call 435-8221 for more information. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Portage Lake Tourism Committee is sponsoring the Whoopie Pie Festival in loving memory of Wilza Robertson. There will be many different types of whoopie pies to sample along with vendors selling their wares. For more information, please contact Taunja Jandreau at 435-4361.
The Fiddle Head Band will be performing in concert at the Town Hall from1-3 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Portage Lake Tourism Committee and the Portage Lakers Snowmobile Club.
The Motorcycle Rodeo will take place at 3 p.m. at the Town Hall following the band. This event is open to all, townspeople and visitors alike. Come on out and show off your fine moto-skills. This event is sponsored by the Pine State Motorcycle Club.
By 4 p.m., after the sugar has worn off from the whoopie pies and the dancing and riding are over, everyone should have worked up a good appetite in time for the Pig Roast. The Portage Lakers Snowmobile Club will once again be sponsoring and serving up a delicious meal for everyone. The fee for the meal will be $8 for adults and $4 for kids 12 and under. The meal will be served until all the pork is gone.
The Canoe Carry, sponsored by the Portage Lake Historical Society, will be from 6:30-8 p.m. This event is a historical reenactment of the travel through the Fish Lakes region made by the early settlers and Native Americans. Whether you want to take part in the reenactment or stand on shore to welcome the travelers, this is an event that should not be missed. A fireworks display, sponsored by the Portage Lake Tourism Committee, is set to begin at 8:45 p.m. over the lake.
The parade will take place on Main Street beginning at noon Sunday.
