When the weather was windy and we had new powdery snow on the ground, it made for some interesting times other than sliding.
Mack, my neighbor, lived in a huge set of farm buildings just up the road. These buildings were all attached and were about 150 yards long. The State of Maine DOT used to put up snow fence to keep the snow from drifting in the road so bad and by doing that, the snow on the west side of Mack’s house was drifted from 10 to 15 feet deep.
Mack started as soon as the drifts were high enough and dug tunnels and anterooms all through this drift. We could get in the tunnel near the road and for over 150 yards we could crawl all through the snow inside and not freeze due to wind chills and never once got our face wet with blowing snow.
Here again, we made our own fun out of what was available in the northern Maine winter.
