Aroostook joins Emergency Management Awareness Month

Aroostook County Emergency Management is proud to join the International Association of Emergency Managers in recognizing August 2025 as National Emergency Management Awareness Month, said Aroostook EMA Director Darren Woods.

This nationwide campaign aims to raise awareness about the emergency management profession and the critical role emergency managers play in keeping our communities safe and resilient. Whether responding to a natural disaster, coordinating a public health response, or planning for long-term recovery, emergency managers work behind the scenes every day to protect lives, property, and essential services.

These professionals serve in every corner of Maine — from municipal and county emergency management agencies to tribal, state, and federal partners, as well as across sectors like healthcare, higher education, utilities, transportation, and private industry.

“We want to encourage folks to use this opportunity for our residents to get to know what their community is doing for preparedness and resiliency. We also encourage anyone to contact our office with any questions that they may have,” Woods said.

Throughout August, the Aroostook agency encourages the public to: learn what emergency management is and why it matters; find out who your local emergency manager is, in your town, county, workplace, school or industry; ask about existing emergency plans and preparedness initiatives in your area; and find out how you can support and partner with your local emergency management office.

Whether you’re a resident, business owner, or part of a local organization, you have a role to play in community preparedness, Woods said. Building relationships with emergency managers and understanding your local plans is the first step toward becoming a more informed and resilient community member.
